'Shroomin'

Best way to get folks to look at a thread? Make a cheesy pun like "shroomin".

Any, I could've posted in the accessories forum, but no one goes there.

What's the best/easiest way to 1) fix mushrooming tips 2) prevent them? Knowing me, anything complicated will damage my tip and ferrule. Will painter's tape protect the ferrule while I repair?

I like soft tips, so I have to deal with this sooner or later.

Thanks all.

I used kamui clear black supersoft for a long time...you're right; no shroomage.I bought a new shaft with just a kamui black soft, and its mushrooming. Why?

I've had very little issue with mushrooming once I swtiched over to Kamui black (med). I would imagine the soft and super soft will mushroom more. Ensure you are burnishing your tip after you scuff/pik it. All it takes is a piece of leather. I personally use the glossy side of the "Nick Varner's Edge" shaft papers to burnish. (be aware, with how thin they are, if you aren't careful you WILL burn your fingers) A tiny bit of water/saliva (I don't recommend licking, blech) along the SIDEWALL (not the top) of your tip before hand and go to town. It will help seal the side walls of your tip and help keep it from mushrooming.

No offense meant, but those pencil sharpener mushroom tools are crap.

Try this one ... it has a depth gauge and cuts pretty square.

its not personal so there is no offense taken
everyone is supposed to voice their opinion in a civil manner which you did....
we need to agree to disagree
i badly cut into an ivory ferrule with the porper device.....  :embarrassed2:
maybe i didnt use it correctly
but
have never had a problem with the red tool
the leather mushrooming comes off in a nice thin ribbon
the black was not sharp enough and didnt cut smoothly

Installation techniques vary. When I install a Kamui, it won't mushroom. Whoever did your super soft before, you might want to go see them again.

There are really few good options for repairing it except having the excess trimmed off with a very sharp blade on a lathe. Is it *possible* to do by hand? I guess. But the when I said "good options", I was thinking lathe. To prevent the issue from recurring you want someone that will trim the tip correctly, and burnish it the right way for a layered tip.

If the black soft is mushrooming repeatedly, it might have got ruined during the install. Depending on how people cut the tip, they can really get wrecked and become mushy.

I guess what I'm saying is find a really good tip installer. If you are in Northeast Massachusetts area, I know a guy ;-)

People used to wet the side of the tip, which would help to harden and stiffen the leather when it dried.
