Played a few games the other night of essentially 8 ball but instead of hitting the cue ball you would hit your object ball into the cue ball and try to hit it (the object ball) into the pocket by either carom or forcing it or whatever. Basically looking for the official rules. It was fun and I have never played it...

Interesting: a couple guys in my pool room play it and they call it "Philadelphia".

I think the original name for the game was "kiss pool", and Willie Jopling wrote down the rules 50 years ago. The rules are listed in the link by provided by ShakeSea.

Its called " Get the object balls dirty as s^*t". Loser has to clean the balls so next user doesn't have to play with grimy balls. Do us all a favor and play this at home.

A Rack by any other name...

That's it! I knew it was named after a U.S. city or state. I saw the rules for this game published in a book about pool. I believe it was one of Robert Byrne's books that had a section on rules of lesser known billiard games. Though I do think it was originally called "Kiss Pool".

Thank you. Now I can stop racking my brain and start racking the balls.

And now for something completely different...

I thought it was called cowboy pool.

Cowboy pool is a different game. It is a points-based game played with only the 1, 3, and 5 ball. However, the winning point must be scored by pocketing the cue ball with a carom off one of the other balls (I think it has to be the 1-ball).

At least, according to a book I read, that is how Cowboy pool is played.

I have always called it Irish billiards as well

Yes it is. One of the many variations of pool from back in the days when there was a poolhall or 2 in virtually every town in America.
They called it Irish Billiards or Irish Pool at least 70 years ago, and probably longer than that.

I always thought it was a play on the name English Billiards where you can score by
an "In Off", or scratching the CB into pocket.
