Why the low turnout at the CSI US Open One Pocket

Totally agree. However people like to second guess a lot when they have zero money at stake. Rather than a lot of talk out of the Midwest someone should make CSI an offer.

They did, back when this was up for discussion in February.

Teacherman referenced his original offer, made online and in phone conversation with Mark, in this very thread:

Here in the heart of the midwest....One Pocket is quite popular....I offered to host it and add $5000.

No doubt in my mind that the Midwest would have drawn 20-30 AMATEURS. Add the pros who would have shown up and you have a nice event.

Teacherman even offered to work with Greg Sullivan and have additional Diamonds brought in for the event.

An offer to buy the rights to the US Open. I wasn't very clear on that. I was however clear on post #15 of this thread.

ah, yah. So where is they for this event?! In St. Louis you could hold this any old time and still double the entry they got in CT.

They are where all pool players are - trying to borrow the money to pay their rent:)

Upon further review I did say that everything you said was true - howsomeever,
there are enough players in the region to support a tournament.

Getting them to come... As pt pointed out, it takes some time.

I understand -- pool players are the worst at committing, showing up.

That said, I really think the Midwest is the place to hold a 1pocket event like the US Open. Give folks eight months, or even better a year to plan and you'll get a decent showing. It'll only grow in the out years.

All true, but, unless things have changed since the last Ice Age... Washington(DC),
Baltimore and Philly are absolutely crawling with One Pocket players. Throw in
NYC and New Jersey and you've got a mob of them.

I spent 4 years in Connecticut for college, and 3 in Boston for law school. My experience there leaves me firmly convinced that the "game literacy" of the average player in the Midwest is higher than that of the average one player in the Northeast...when we are talking about one pocket.

Certainly, the northeast has its fair share of "killers", but the interest of northeast killers and average players alike in one pocket simply does not match the interest of players here.

I think you underestimate the following one pocket has in this part of the country. I go to at least 1 Olathe event every year; it pays out way less than the US Open tournament, and I think the last time there were at least 8 "pro" players in the tournament along with a field of about 30 quality amateur players.

Alex wins the A-side finals 4-1.

they were playing extra agressive...the pockets will suit the straight pool more....
....a wee bit loose to suit most one hole players

Well sure - many years ago there was a US Open type One Pocket Tournament
in Kalamazoo MI that drew throngs and more.

Is the current Open some evolution of that event?

Dale

Shuff and Deuel on the B-side.....Deuel 2-0

Shuff was 6 balls up the second game...but Deuel stole it.

Same event, just new owners to the rights to use "US Open 1P". I drove over from Chicago a couple of times to see the Kalamazoo events. Pretty fun time. Spaeth, Cook, Reyes, etc.

Finals tomorrow...?

I've seen results, but not the schedule.
If anyone knows tomorrow's [Thursday] schedule, posting this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It might be interesting to test the Midwest theory next year if CSI already doesn't have a venue selected - contract with a room early (8-10) months out, heavy promotion, VIP ticket sales in advance and work with the room owner to assist in securing sponsorship/added monies from local business who have an interest in national promotion in conjunction with CSI.

I think Teacherman did exactly that: offered to host and add $5k. Hopefully he's on the very short list for 2017 and the word can get out earlier.

I've got a regular 1P opponent at Amsterdam when I visit NYC. He says that my trips are basically the only time he gets to play the game because everyone there just plays 9-ball.

I played the houseman at Society some 1P as well. He was good but also said that he was mostly a straight pool player.

In Boston, I had to hunt for a 1P game and ended up playing MIT Mike as I recall. He also said few people play one hole in Boston.

So I've seen the same things.

It is true that in DC, the top local players play a lot of one pocket. Probably in Baltimore and Philly too. But it's a pretty good hike from DC to CT, and I-95 can be a real pain.

There are, no doubt, some really great 1pocket players in that area. Plenty of SS's too. But here, they are all over the place. Walk into a joint and you can easily run into a buzzsaw :-)
