Nobody can beat me!!!

The bar banger thread got me laughing. Then thinking about this. While you may not want to admit it here, there are times in the bar when you're beating your chest and proclaim NOBODY can beat me! We all know what this means, some do not. Some ( bar bangers ) taka it very literally lol. On a challenge table or practice or league or whatever, if they win one game against you you will FOREVER hear how they can beat you lol. There's no substance to this post other than some levity but has anyone else experienced this??? Lol

Many years ago when I was working in a pool hall and playing every day of the week, I'd go into bars all the time and challenge every table that you could challenge, especially the ones with money games.

I'd tell them up front that I thought I could beat anybody in the place. 99.9% of the time I was right and left with their money.

I learned that as a kid. The guy who owned the pool room would take me to different towns and bars and say, "this kid can beat anybody in here". Of course, nobody is going to let that challenge go. Everybody can beat a kid.

If you tell them up front that you are going to win, then you never get accused of hustling anybody.

Great post. From the time from 13-16 I made more money than anyone should. It was a Korean bar and I paid tribute but my family was friends so not that often lol. It was always take care of the bar maids which I did- very well

For sure, you can beat some recreational players 20-1, but that one game seems to signal that they can beat you. My favorite of course is when they get within the last 2-3 balls in 8 ball a few times and then proclaim that they can give you a tough game. Both players brought it up for a long long time afterwards.

my wife and I are friends with another couple who live in another state & have a table in their house.

we were visiting, and I was playing the other wife, and not really trying at all. She got lucky and won a game and promptly quit, super happy with her win..........she will forever think she can "beat me" and I will likely never get the chance to play her again......

I guess its not a bad thing, friendship is more important in this situation, but it still bothers me, LOL

My buddy and I go to a working man type bar. Place is packed. There's 1 spot at the bar and my friend walks there to order our beers. He's 260 and works construction. Thus guy 145 tops comes up and says you are in my spot. He's bold as hell. My friend says hey we are just grabbing some beers then gonna play pool. Guy says I know someone who can beat your friend.

So they go at it and decide I'm gonna play this mystery person 1 game of 8 ball for 100 bucks. Turns out I'm playing the barmaid. I tell her they are both nuts. I win coin toss. Break and make a ball. Shoot in 4 more and then lock her safe up against the back of her own ball. She hits it open. Then I run out.

Guy is pissed....pays off and leaves. My friend and I are cracking up laughing. I can't say if she could play or not cause she never had a shot.

be careful. i have went to many "working man" bars that have 5-10 people who all play sporty and can empty your pockets and your friends too.

however, this is the essence of competition in pool. this guy believes he can beat the other guy. pool needs more of this competition. only and increase in the average guy's paycheck will accomplish this, though.

Even in our city league, my captain would occasionally beat me in a practice game or two. Yes, he came to the conclusion that we play "close" to each other and that I wasn't really better than him.

Then one day, I suggest we go to the pool room and play on a 9 footer. I kept score. I beat him 24 to 4. Near the middle of his beating, he actually said, if we keep playing, you're going to need to rack your own! His ego was so hurt so much, he didn't want everyone in the room to see how bad I was beating him.

Then near the end, he says in a mad and frustrated way, "I not playing worse, you're just playing better!".

Unreal how delusional people can be when it comes to their real skill level.

I know an APA 4, weak 5, that likes to play people for $1/rack. If he wins, he likes to go around saying that he beat so and so for money. Whenever someone actually wants to gamble, he turns it into a big argument and a game is never made.

Thats pretty typical. I beat a guy in a tournament and instead of shaking my hand afterwords he said "I will play you anytime for $100 a game". I offered to play $100 sets but I guess he really did not want to, he declined.:confused::confused:

Ahh yes, "i'll play him for money anytime". Anytime never comes.

There's no bar action here at all. If they were still building things here , with a few thousand guys making 60k a year on a high school diploma, they'd be action...

I see a few 10 dollar race to 1 type events from time to time. ...not really a reason to hang with drunks.

Bangers always make the loudest proclamations!

When I used to play pool at the old Blue Jay Cue Club in Ellicott City, MD I saw this all the time. On Sundays you would get the bangers /after-church crowd and they always talked the most trash, hands down.

I now play at both Magic 8 Cue Club in Cockeysville, MD and Bank Shots Bar & Grill in Laurel, MD and the phenomenon is the same. The folks who play the worst bark the loudest.

I suppose it goes hand in hand with that "empty vessels" thing.
