Gotham City Grind Ep1

personally, I liked the quick cuts. Makes it interesting rather than the story being told as a "laundry list".

When I adjust the volume down for the loud music, then I can't hear the voice...so, I too left the video early. Jump shots didn't bother me.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet, thought people might want to take a look and weigh in. I will say the editing is terrible, the jump cuts are very abrupt and plentiful.

It's a freakin' youtube video, not a nominee for an oscar....so I'd cut them a ton of slack.

And it's more the camera work than the editing. If they invested in a steady-cam, it would improve things a ton.

But hey...someone's obviously having fun putting it together and trying things... so good for them.

Do you have any prior experience with video production?

I'm just wondering if this opinion is coming from an average consumer or an experienced videographer.

Adjacent to real professionals, I've worked in technology based media for almost 20 years, with graphic design, animation and programming, some video editing / production work for both enterprises and fashion companies.

With that said, I wasn't basing my comment on any technical professional opinion but a personal one, the cuts are fast and almost too subtle to me, especially in the beginning where it almost gives the impression of a frame stutter.

Also - just for the record, I'm not trashing the production, the effort or the idea - anything being done to expose pool is good but that doesn't mean I am not entitled to think part of it could be improved.

My point was just to share the episode, not to flame it.

That's a funny way to not flame it.

They're obviously trying things out....some things work, and some don't. Instead of trashing it, you could point out things they did that worked well....and offer constructive criticism on the things that didn't.

Wow, that's considered trashing something nowadays? I had no clue...

I'd call that trashing something. He basically said....'hey look at this everyone,it's terrible.'

Agreed, but just as importantly in regards to it being a YouTube video, this is the trend. Most of YouTube is shorts w quick editing because the majority of people tuning in have a sandwich in their mouth during their lunch break.

It appears as though the bar for trashing something is way too low. It's a discussion forum, will all our discussions be happy, fuzzy and positive? The bar for trashing people, aiming systems, elbows or just about anything else certainly isn't that low around here.

This isn't a Youtube video a member threw up there, it's a semi-professional production tied to NYCGrind and marketed through Facebook by them and Gotham City. I said I think the quick edits are terrible, then I followed up with some positive remarks and the idea that any exposure is good.

If it takes more than that to not be considered trashing, then so be it.

For all we know, it was made by a 16 year old kid with a phone cam and edited with iMovie.

My point, is that it's obviously not a professional production....so why critique it like one?

it looks like someone's trying to mimic a reality show style, trying things out and having fun with it.

Maybe our posts crossed, see my previous post. This is marketed as a professional production, by Gotham City and NYC Grind.

I don't think you should trash it by saying that it looks like someone just having fun and trying mimic a show style or that it could have been made by a 16 year old. Think about how that might make the team of professionals who produced it feel.

It's not a team of film professionals that created this...which should be obvious to someone who's been 'adjacent to real professionals' for 20 years.

I'm sure the folks that created and market this including NYCGrind, Gotham Billiards and Allison Fisher would disagree.

As to the not so subtle jab at my credibility, I don't feel the need to justify that to you. If you were so inclined it wouldn't be very difficult to identify me and my experience is easily verified. Also, you don't have to have any experience to have an opinion about a video, so I don't see the relevance.

I'm done with this childish argument either way, in my opinion the jump cuts are terrible.
I don't believe that is 'trashing' that is worthy of comment or argument. Your assertion that it could be done by a 16 year old is in direct conflict with the marketing of it and you have missed the point of my immediate follow up post.

The edits (basically fade-ins and fade-outs) are faster than I would like, but par-for-the-course in today's hyper-video world. I usually use a 1.5 second fade-in/out, but young people seeing my stuff would probably say "Wow, this was edited by an old guy"...and they'd be right.
