Naysayers, All of You!

Grow up, Flip. Most of us have been playing this game too damn long to believe that some twenty something kid is going to break into the pro ranks. And, if you ask me, it's an insult to the pro players when this sort of thing comes up.
You millennials, or x-gens, are just going to have to learn that the crap Mommy and Daddy, and all the TV commercials told you about..."If you can dream it, you can do it.", just isn't true.

Let him know there is no trophy for trying!

Pool needs to do this...

Pool needs to do that...

We need to get our youth involved...

Blah, Blah, Blah...

That's all I ever hear on here.

Finally, there is a post from some young kid with a future goal of going pro looking for a little advice. Next thing you know there is a 6 page thread on how stupid he is and that he should go get a job instead.

What a bunch of naysayers!! Don't crush somebody's dream. What's wrong with somebody pursuing a dream? Would you go to a little league baseball practice and start telling all the kids how they aren't going to be good enough to go pro and most of them won't even be good enough to play in college?

If you want to get the youth involved in pool, let them follow their dreams. Don't be an A-Hole because you weren't good enough yourself or all of your friends weren't good enough or because there isn't enough money in pool or whatever. You should be appreciative that somebody new fell in love with pool! Provide a little support for once...

Some dreams are just really really really not smart. He should have had that dream at age 11.

I agree that the kid will fail. But why should anyone tell him that? Do you want more people to play pool or less? If you want this sport to grow you should encourage people to try to be the best player on the planet. That's what keeps people interested.

And for every one player that is obsessed with pool there are probably 5 friends of theirs that take an interest in pool. And of those players maybe a few of their friends will start playing. Eventually it will cause a chain reaction and lots of players will start playing because of this one player who became obsessed.

However, if every time someone sets their goals high you poop on their dreams and they quit, you are hurting the sport. That's my point here. Of course the kid is going to fail, that's obvious. But you don't need to tell him that and try to discourage beginners.

Shame on all of you!

Why can't a 20 year old be a world beater? See it all the time in other sports. Either through extensive training or natural talent. I have seen 5 year Olds playing the piano better than professional adults. There are teenagers right now that can play at a very high level. Mainly through natural talent. Some have it and some dont. Not everyone needs years and year to become good at something.

One of the most active members on here was looking to play pro speed (not be a pro, just play well enough). He was run off by the same naysayers. Pretty bad and I imagine there are a lot of lurkers who don't want to even make their first post because of it and some of the other garbage you see on these boards.

I wish the guy the best, but he is 2 months into a hiatus because he felt unmotivated. And in the long thread he basically said he never excelled in anything because he never stuck to it but pool is different. But now it isn't.

So that might not be the best example.

Because it's a discussion forum, not a strict question and answer forum - there are differences. If you post a topic on a discussion forum you should expect...wait for it... discussion.

Yup. If you want answers to questions just ask the question. If you want to tell your whole story, expect comments.

Yup, that is just what pool needs to grow. Yet another broken down bum who never did anything with his life, telling anyone who he can get to listen how he could have been one of the great ones. When sober, that is.

I listened for a year or two because I was learning how to play billiards from the guy (not for money, we played and I listened to his BS - claimed to be an old running buddy of Danny McGoorty), but no parent wants that for their kid. And I sure wouldn't have wanted to live any part of HIS life.

But let's let this kid here go down that road without a word because it is for the GOOD FOR POOL!!!!!

Ok ENGLISH. You're doing a great job filling his shoes. Maybe Shame on you. You're looking for one way support.

I'm not looking for any support. I'm here to make you realize that you are part of the problem. So you need to either:

A. Accept that you are part of the problem and quit trying to come up with ways to "save pool"

B. Change your ways and actually help

I don't have to do anything. Just for the record I'm all about pool and promoting/encouraging. I did not tell MGhost to stop playing pool. I gave a sensible opinion. At this point I'd like to hear from MGhost and his thoughts. And if he should try and fail I would not laugh, told you so, etc. I don't care what he does. You know what ...you got me thinking. I'm 69 and retired. Maybe I'll sacrifice retirement and try to be a pro. What do you think.

Colonel Sanders wasn't doing too well when he hit retirement age.....
....then he had a dream.

You can have dreams and still make sensible every day decisions.

pt....this is recieved knowledge...not smart enough to figure it out on my own.

Find me one. Find me a professional pool player who started when they were in their twenties. Or, a baseball player, or a golfer, or a cat juggler. It can't be done.

Let's take this line by line:

"I don't have to do anything." - If you do nothing, then you'll be a hypocrite.

"Just for the record I'm all about pool and promoting/encouraging." - Well you are having an adverse effect on the sport. So maybe try the opposite approach.

"I did not tell MGhost to stop playing pool. I gave a sensible opinion." - Yes, your opinion was sensible however he is more likely to stop playing pool after hearing these types of opinions. And he did not ask for your opinion.

"At this point I'd like to hear from MGhost and his thoughts." - Me too.

"And if he should try and fail I would not laugh, told you so, etc. I don't care what he does." - The whole MGhost thread is full of people making fun of the last guy who tried and failed. There are also a few similar posts in this thread. So there is some mockery going on here...a lot of it.

"You know what ...you got me thinking. I'm 69 and retired. Maybe I'll sacrifice retirement and try to be a pro." - Noted

"What do you think." - There's the kicker! You asked what I thought! MGhost most certainly did not ask what you think. He already decided to try to go pro. He was asking for advice on tournaments and sponsorships and you had to throw your discouraging two cents in to try to stop him. Why? Are you evil? Are you against dreamers? Are you against pool? O that's right, you're just a hypocrite. I almost forgot. Carry on sir!

Pt, it's one thing to steal a chicken cooking recipe, but quite another to line up a nine-ball and make the shot enough times, and with a percentage rate high enough to be considered a professional.
