About To Give Up

I am at my wits end. No progress at all. Nearly 18 years ago I picked up this hobby and have gotten a little better but that's it. I cant runout for sh~t anymore. And my Gold Crown IV, now with the 4.25 inch pockets, is even stingier than ever off the break. I broke 44 times this afternoon and evening and had one good chance to runout and one decent chance to runout. 2 out of 42. The other 42 times were hopeless for anybody. And I hosed up both chances I had.

Maybe I should just sell everything and give up. The way things are right now that sounds like a good idea. I am just beating my head against the wall right now.

r/Mike

Step one: Buy a magic rack.

Step two: Reduce break speed by about half.

Step three: Experiment to find the speed that makes the corner ball go.

Step four: Learn to play position on the 1.

Step five: Go to the local poolroom and rob everybody.

Step six: Write a book on pool

Step seven: Retire to a life of luxury and hedonism

Seriously, though, the secret to the 9 ball break is playing position on the one. To achieve that you need a consistent break and more importantly: a consitent rack. Learn to rack with a triangle or buy a magic rack! To get a consistent break, you need to lower your speed to a point where you feel you have control over the cueball. Usually, in the beginning, that means slower than you'd ever consider normally. Forget about trying to run out. Find a spot where you can make the corner ball with a fairly soft stroke (close to the long rail usually). Just break over and over and over again, focusing only on the one and the cueball (given that the corner ball is going). It's a miniature game in itself, and can actually be fun, if you keep score.

Gee, thnx. As someone who used to work part time at a bowling alley while studying, and had a 195 bowling average, I can emphatically say: NO!

What a nice, constructive post, and fun video. You know, I used to just love:rolleyes: having to explain to idiots like the guy in the video, that even if it would be "fun" to watch them crack their skulls after slipping on the oil and banging their head on the rock hard, synthetic lane or getting crushed by the pinsetter they'd have to leave without a refund and not come back. Then I'd have to wash the approach clean of their oily footprints. One lady broke her shoulder, then passed out and puked all over herself. It sure was fun to try to keep her from choking on her own vomit, while her friends and relatives, doing nothing to help her, btw, blamed me for her blatantly defying explicit warning signs not to go out onto the lane. I sure loved that job.

I've tried to be constructive on this forum, but it's getting harder and harder and I've pretty much given up at this point. I thought the OP needed to know that if he wasn't getting runnable racks, then he wasn't controlling the one ball. I guess that was too basic to entertain or enlighten you, which btw was not the intention behind my post at all. My post was directed to the OP. I seriously don't know why I even try, what with people claiming pros play mostly center ball and other such lies being pushed on beginners, what chances does basic common sense have?

I seriously don't know what I've said to make me a target for your "wit", I guess I might not be a good enough player to give advice to the OP? That's ok. I'm no world beater, but I do get runnable racks, more than 1 in 44, anyway, and you know what, every now and then I run a few. You don't have to be a world beater to do that. Or perhaps you think the advice was too generic and lame? Maybe so, but if 1 in 44 racks are runnable, then you are not breaking properly, in fact your break is fundamentally bad. You are either randomly smashing the rack or seriously mishitting the cueball. To you this may be obvious, but maybe not to the OP.

Just because you can't or don't understand what is actually written vs. what you think you read, is no reason to be calling others liars and having no common sense. Guess you also missed the post that a pro made about him mainly using center ball. Guess he was just lying too.

I was just browsing and found this thread. I've only glanced through it to get the gist of what it's all about. You say you've gone though this spiral for twelve years and have seen little progress. It is evident that many on this site have provided much valuable advice. You have probably received good advice elsewhere too. In this case and with the limited information I have read here I am led to one of two conclusions. You have either ignored much of the advice which has been freely offered and or failed to apply sufficient effort to that advice or you suffer from Munchausen's syndrome.

Why else would you torture yourself for so many years over a game you aren't having any fun playing?

Tom

I have one other question for you. I hope you take this in the spirit of good intentions. If you have been struggling for so many years why on earth would you tighten the pockets on your home table. If you wish to build your self confidence why not loosen the pockets? What you've done there makes no sense to me.

I overreacted a bit, no apology necessary. I really dislike bowling, in case you couldn't tell.

I'm curious.... what makes it the funniest thread on all of azb?

It's funny, because everyone knows he doesn't care about getting better. All he wants to do is complain about his "bad luck" and get sympathy.

His piss poor attitude is the reason for his struggles. You're welcome to keep enabling him, but to the rest of us, it's a joke that's wearing very thin.

Some food for thought. 14 threads on the first two pages he's started asking for advice. In those threads, he's received some great tips and suggestions. In those threads, he had no problems with openly disagreeing with a lot of the advice given. Do you know how many times he actually said "thank you" to someone giving him advice.

ONCE.

I understand your frustration and the frustration of others who sincerely offer advice and get nothing in return from the op. But that's not why I post here. I post answers here because there are a lot of players who read the forum, and maybe they have a similar issue --- and maybe an answer I wrote might help them. I have gotten confirmation that it has been the case on more than a few occasions.

So whether he cooperates and takes my advice or not, well, that's his choice. I know that there's someone out there who gets my responses.

It would do you and others here some good to think that way as well.

Me an enabler? Heck no.
