Champion for many years

When he was on his game only player alive could possibly beat him on all games was Efren, and he didn't have to beat him !

Also, just one of the most genuinely nice guys I've met in the pool world.

Yep

When he was on his game only player alive could possibly beat him on all games was Efren, and he didn't have to beat him !

If I recall correctly, I think Nick went to the Phillippines once to play Efren in another "Color of Money" type match, and won. When somebody asked Efren why he lost, he said Nick "never missed." LOL

NIck Varner Champion:
World Straight Pool
World 9-Ball
World 8-Ball
World 1-Pocket

If they had a World 10-Ball Tournament during his playing days, I have no doubt that Nick would have won that title also.

Add to that .... World Bank Pool Champion

...and he beat Efren in a race to fifty....in the Philippines....might be the only one.

Yet Efren still thinks Sigel was best 9 Ball player ever.

Efren told Alex once....if he had to bet all his money on a player for one game..........
...he would choose Nick Varner.

I believe Efren felt Sigel was the best around American player....
...but he's still betting on Nicky for that one game.

I personally feel there were a bunch of better strokes out there.....
...but Varner, for tenacity and heart, may have been the best.

Folks nick was only guy from that era that won world championships in all games played! Sigel did not do that! In my opinion varner is absolutely best all around usa pool player living. Will give sigel credit the man won a lot of pool tournaments! Mr. Finals him self.

My thoughts exactly.

I really like to watch Nick play one pocket.....I think everyone else likes to see him play other stuff, but his one pocket is incredible.

"It is a great honor to be nominated to the Straight Pool Hall of Fame. Because I will not be able to make the event this year, I request that the other nominees be considered for the votes so that the 14.1 Hall of Fame and its fans can enjoy an accepting speaker on that special night. I truly appreciate the outpouring of support from the fans and I wish the other candidates all the best. I truly hope to be nominated on the ballot again next year. " - Nick Varner, 1980 & 1986 World 14.1 Champion
