Skids

I'm looking for some advice or guidance on how to identify potential skid situations and how to handle them?

I don't know if I'm doing something other than just paying more attention but I seem to notice a lot a of skidding lately.

I don't have control of the cleanliness of the balls, any suggestions?

b

PS - I'm talking about billiard balls and cling / skidding causing a miss, not underwear skidmarks or other type of clean or dirty balls, so let's get that out of the way...

A slow roll center hit on the vertical axis will often allow the blob of chalk to rotate and get between the balls and seems to be a shot where more kicks happen.

Thanks - do you anticipate this and use a little inside / outside, is this something that good players actively think about or just deal with?

Don't you have the ability to clean the cue ball (at least between racks and when you get BIH?

Also, if the balls are really dirty have you tried asking your opponent before you start if you can wipe the balls down (may or may not get agreement on that one).

Also, you do have control of the chalk you are using - some chalks, like Kamui, leave marks on the ball for longer (as opposed to being rubbed off on the table).

I watched a Snooker match the other week Osullivan vs Trump, in the course of 3-4 frames Trump had 7 detectable kicks and Ronnie had 1.
Around the black Ronnie tends to punch the balls using a lot of stun or stun run and draw, Trump seems roll the ball quite a bit. Rolling a ball can also be played different ways along the vertical axis so these two players may play the roll shot differently.
I am sure the way the player strikes the ball can determine how often it happens, some players do use a little English to avoid kicks, I avoid rolling balls especially the money ball.

This is helpful thanks, I think I need to start to anticipate this and try to work around it.

I think I can help. I've been on the skids for years.
Sore knees in the morning. A half bottle of Advil, or a quarter bottle of Aleve.
The inability to do what needs to be done when the time cones, if you know what I mean. Five tabs of Cialis. CAUTION: If you're in the batters box for longer than four hours, call 911, then all the guys you play pool with.
You can't remember whether you've had three shots of Tequila, or six. Do twelve, and call it a night.

Glad I could help. If you need me I'll be at The Shady Inn Extended Care Center, for the rest of the day. :thud:

And some cue balls skid more than others. The one's I've had problems with, are the Red Circle, and the older Cyclops. Cloth conditions can contribute as well. Shiny, worn Simonis and new cloth can drive you nuts.

Skids: One of the most disturbing things to ever happen on a pool table. I can remember every skid that's ever happened to me. And it always seems to happen at the very worst time.

Tramp you're the reason why I added the part about skidmarks and clean balls to end of my post, lol...

With all the talk of skids and balls thats right where I was headed, I was already laughing to myself, then you killed me with your last sentence. What a buzzkill

WCB: I find that I get skiddy when I am attempting masse like maneuvers at low to medium speeds. This comes up lots in one pocket. The best way I have come to judge this type of behavior from the cue ball is merely by hitting the Cue ball over and over at varying angles and speeds to get the feel of when it happens. However, this changes at the environment changes and from one table to the next. You really need to start educating yourself on the type of fabric on the tables you play action on... it is an advantage to know what it is, how it evolves throughout the day and night and to the humidity and temperature changes that occur with the presence of humans.

To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses everyone, always something else to worry about...

I'm going to assume that I'm not actually skidding more lately, rather I'm getting better at recognizing how I've hit the ball and how it should react so I'm just noticing it more.

Still - it annoys the hell out of me.

Skids happen mostly when using high english at low speeds. The object ball transfers reverse englis and breaks traction with the cloth, thereby skidding or sliding forward. This happens often on new, slick cloth.

Skids often happen when chalk increasing fiction between the cue ball and object ball causes the same.
