Taper Machine Question

I am looking for a dedicated tapering machine. I am looking at the Unique Products Taper shaper or the CNC Taper machine from Todd at Mid-America.

What is the best choice or is there something different?

Thanks in advance

I have Todd's setup with the CueCut program from MPVCue (Kelly) and have
been very pleased with it.

This setup is very nice because you can have unlimited tapers at the click of a button. This setup is only for cutting dowels and tapers but since I have other machines for cutting points and tip and ferrule work it works just fine for me.

The Taper Shaper looks like a good setup also but I have not used one.

Todd and Kelly have been very good with support for their products.

You could but I prefer to do them on a mill. To do them with Todd's
Setup you would need an indexable headstock.

My Large bore headstock has indexing and the small bore headstock is available with indexing as an option for about $25.00.

I don`t own one of Todds tapering machines, but I do own a Taper Shaper from Unique and I have experience with Taig based systems.
The Taper Shaper is a quite ridgid setup, but it`s not the most efficient setup, if you plan on doing different tapers.
Todds system is about $1000 cheaper and once dialed in, it will be alot more flexible and easier to use.
In a perfect world a combination of the ruggedness of the Taper Shaper and the ease of use of a CNC system would be perfect.
Xzero is comming out with a more affordable solution, maybe that is the way to go?

I also have one of Todds tapering machines....its very versatile and easy to use....and I do have a large bore indexable headstock on it and I have cut points on it also...Todds equipment gives you the most bang for your buck.....also since it is a cnc machine the tapers u create are infinite since it doesnt use a rigid taper bar...plus you have Todd for service ..cant beat it.

can you cut ring billets on Todd's CNC with MVP cues program?

Todd's CNC setup lacks a 3rd (vertical) axis. My Ring Billet program is a 3 axis program. It works best (by far) with a 3 axis machine.

You can cut slots in a billet using 2 axes (whether CNC or not), but you will be limited. If you cut from the top (vertical router mount), you will be limited to a fixed slot depth, save manually changing router position in clamp between passes. If you cut from the side horizontally, you will be limited to using on size cutters for fixed slot widths.
