How did Cliff Joyner fall off the 1-pkt map?

If I recall correctly from Jay Helfert's most recent book, he had a lot of financial problems related to gambling

Not really directly related to the OP's question, but the last time that I saw him play I noticed he had developed quite a severe hitch/pause in his stroke. And this hitch didn't seem to have helped his game at all...

He's not far off...,

It seemed to be Cliff and Efren for years and then his game vanished into thin air.

What happened?

He's a close friend of mine and he has had some challenges over the past few years with his health and finances. Luckily the health issues are not life threating, but like most Pool players the challenge of no health insurance limits or eliminates the options for rehabbing a back/shoulder injury.

Financial problems are what they are, but we all know how mental this game is and if your not all there when you come to the table, your game wont be either.

Not to be a dock but for the last 6 or so years with Obama care full coverage insurance has been available for alunch low income folks for free or very near free. I have a feeling that will be changing in the next year or two but maybe tell him to check into it before it does change,

Not so much.

He still plays but age gets us all. Might still be in top 25

Its not an age thing with Cliff, he just isn't there mentally do to all that going on in his personal life.

You can play One Pocket well beyond Cliffs age ask Efren!

He wasnt either!

Efren isn't the norm.

There was a time when Cliff was the best and only Efren could beat him, trust me it aint age, he never had a drug or drinking problem and he's not over weight.

If he can get his fitness up, health back on track, the finances will improve over time.

He's not way off, its mental. One Pocket and 8 Ball can be played at a high level for many, many years when you play like he can.

Your right.

Yea we had that conversation, sometimes you got let things happen when they do..,

Yes you can play well at an older age but even Efren can't play like 10-20 years ago. Age also affects mental and physical health

No disrespect intended, just wondering who the 24 are that want to play Cliff even for cash?

I remember about 15 year ago at the Derby. Efren and Cliff played a big set on the TV table. What a great match.

Where do you put Cliffs current game? I just did a quick mental count and I put him somewhere about top 15.

Do ya mean like along the lines of too much pride???? If you do, I can totally understand that but when it comes down to your health AND your health is affecting your livelyhood............

Its a tuff call..,

He's nowhere close to his top speed, but I still think there are only 9 guys that can beat him even, if he comes to play and can put down the distraction long enough to win.

There are a few others that have the edge, but they still don't play anywhere close to they way he did, so its up to Cliff with them, if he finds it, their dead, if not then top 15 is probroly right.

I understand that..,

My point is that 9 Ball and 10 Ball require a big break which can greatly diminish later in life. Those games also require a big stroke when the shot comes up that requires it, you don't have any other option.

One Pocket and 8 Ball give you lots of outs, plenty of places to hide any weakness and lots of options to force your opponents hand..,

easy to slow down those gun slingers in One Pocket, just make them Bank!
