Is it because you are shooting the 3 straight into the rail and compressing the rail and it is cutting the 7 at a different angle then it would if you were to play he dead combo?

Exactly there is a time and a place for everything. The only time for this shot is when the other guy has 7 balls and one you can't knock out because youre hooked.

A stute assessment.

I remember a couple of years ago a room owner set up a situation with the CB and a couple of OBs setup up table and he asks me what I'd do and I confessed I was at a loss. So he tries to show me this kick carom two rail bank to move both balls towards a corner pocket down table. He tries it repeatedly and finally sorta gets the balls moving towards the target pocket and I just stare at the table look up at him and say, "Not with a gun to my head." He kept insisting it was good shot.

I think that shot was in the same book :-)
