What I got back into Pool for.....

I was out at Chandleys Chalk and Cue in Statesville the other night and I met a guy who bought my books. So we play and talk about the way he is using my techniques and I see what the guy is doing wrong and we talk about it and it was like this light bulb went off and he started playing great. So I started showing him how to go about playing One Pocket and it was an awesome time. The man was interested in the game itself and it was about his own personal accomplishment. That is what I got back into Pool for!

So why do you play?
 
Some people draw, some sculpt, some build things. Everyone generally has some medium at which they express their creativity, their art, mine is this game. My cue is my brush with which I create my high art, something beautiful & unexpected.
 
Why do I play? That's a good question.
Playing pool (One Pocket) is something I do to pass the time, obviously, but I think it's more than that. I believe It's still a good, and viable, form of self-expression. A way to show myself, and others, that I can (after all these years) do something, and do it reasonably well.
The dream of all old warriors is to die on the field of battle. Are we any different? :)
 
74 yrs old. Started playing again last Feb after a 50+year absence. Have a few friends in our community that have tables and I play once or twice a week for 2 to 3 hours at a time. Mostly 8 ball, 9 ball, with an occasional game of straight pool.

I am a retired professional golfer (do golfers ever retire) with some time on the Sr. PGA Tour back in the 90's. I love competition and pool in addition to golf gives me an outlet for my competitive juices. I also think that both of these sports allow one to express their "creative" side.

I had right hip issues last winter and could not play golf so I started playing pool again. Had hip surgery in early May and all is well now. Play golf 3 times a week during the good weather.

Don't have a good way to judge my pool game as I have never played in leagues. I would say relative to golf (I still play to scratch), I am maybe a "10 hdcp". I can run an occasional 8 or 9 ball table.

Don't really gamble at pool - mostly "bragging rights". A couple of guys here are better than me overall, but I can give them a good game when I am on.

What a beautiful game. I play because I find it relaxing and meditative. I play to feed my competitive nature. I play to learn a new skill that requires an insane amount of knowledge and practice. I play because its a good reason to get out of the house.

There are probably a few more reasons, this game has had me hooked for 20 years and I still cant get enough. There is nothing like watching those little balls roll around in a field of green.

The hope of winning one more big score

I always believed it was easier to win $100K innone play than $1000

Old Soldiers never die.... They just fade away. Or in your case, roll-out 3 inches from the pocket and sit on the titty. :thumbup:

I figured y'all just wanted to go back to college and needed a way to pay tuition, because you know everyone payed their way through college playing pool.
 
Never lost my love of it, but life had gotten in the way.

Golf got way too expensive and way too slow so I changed games...for good.

I can play it until I die... and hope I do die at the table.

I met my wife in a pool hall, but hey, nothing's perfect!:thumbup:

Before that though i play because I have to. I first saw a pool table at age 6 and all I wanted was to see what it was. I finally got to start playing at 15 and haven't quit since. It's an addiction. I sit at home or work and think about pool.

I met mine after getting my clock cleaned in a pool room.....I should have seen it coming!

It's not just a job, it's a ****ing adventure !

But seriously though , playing pool is like hamburgers on the grill and baseball in the park....it is very much a part of American culture and has been from day one.

So besides all the typical reasons that people play, I also enjoy being a part of the carrying-on-of-the-tradition and culture of pool and billiards. It is a story without end and it's legends will continue to emerge for eons to come.

And it's non fattening
 
HA! What a coincidence, I meant my wife in a pool hall back in '67. She was playing this guy 8 ball for a $1 a game and beating him. When she was finished I asked her if she would like to go out on a date, "she said sure" 6 days later we were married. We now have 4 sons, 16 grand-children and 1 great grand child.

Why I started playing pool was quite by accident. Back in 1963 I was 16 and needed a job for some extra money. I walked into a pool room and asked the owner if he could use some help. My job was to keep the place clean and to be the "Rack Boy".
After my 4 or 5 hours of work at a $1 per hour I would get a rack of balls and practice ($0.60 per hour) on the 4.5 x 9.0 snooker table since it saw very little use. Sometimes I even made a ball.
There was something about watching the better players shoot the QB into an OB and the ball going into a pocket. It just fascinated me.
This game is a never ending game, I guess that's why I continue to play and learn. I love learning new ways to play.
As mentioned above, for me this is a very personal game. It keeps my mind sharp and imaginative.

I'm rusty now, I don't always make the right shot selection, and I quite honestly don't have the time to train. I've tried to walk away twice, and twice I came back. It feeds my soul. To me, a well played rack, regardless of the game or discipline, can be as beautiful as watching a master painter or sculptor create a work of art.

I play because the sound of a ball hitting the bottom of a good drop pocket is music to my ears. I play because a well aimed bank shot, a successful kick out of a safety, and a perfect positional shot give me the rush of a lifetime that a lot of people seem to chase and never find in their lives. I play because I like to help teach and coach new players when they ask me for ideas. I play because some of the greatest lessons I've learned about life and myself came after two racks rather than spending a whole week contemplating. To put a little cheese on it, I play because I choose to (thank you Mr. Anderson).

Ultimately, I play because deep down, I know it's a place I belong. Know that sounds a little out there, but pool just feels like something I was meant to be involved with. The more I resist it, the more unhappy I am. When I play, I feel like I am doing something I was meant to do.

You guys made me think about the past. Come to think of it: I met my wife(now ex-wife), while playing pool.

I used to be the bar room bad boy at pool, but I met her when a friend got a table at home. Everyone was knocking the balls around while I was semi-serious. We both had a mutual friend who she was seeing and had their last big fight.
Guess I was next,..... little did I know then.

Back then I thought it was really cool that chics played pool; actually, I still do !

I've always been drawn to solitary sports: golf, racquetball, tennis, bowling, swimming, etc. Of them all, pool reigns supreme. I can do it indoors, day or night, regardless of weather, and alone or with a competitor. I will never cease to be fascinated by the movement of the balls, and the precision and intellect it requires of me.

Simply put, I have loved it since the first time I tried it, and I always will.
