the pockets are double shimmed
i spoke to a mechanic who thought without seeing the table that a fatboy?shim might fix the problm but of course he couldnt say until he saw the table
he asked me if i look down on the shims are the bowed in a little in the middle the answer is yes
any advice to improve the playability of the pockets??

Unless you've got the first set of pocket facing so well blended to the cushions I only see single facings, not double shimmed. I do how ever see huge pockets which look to be 5" at the mother of the pocket, and in the bottom picture on the left side of the pocket the center of the facing is curved inward which indicates end wood grain damage which causes the pocket to absorb the hit of a ball being pocketed, and with as much slate shelf as you have sitting there....you have a lot of room for a ball to find the space to sit in the pocket.

What are the down angles on your pockets? From your pics the pockets don't look like they have much of a down angle, or any down angle at all.

33 years of working on pool tables....but thats a new one on me. You need the rails rebuilt, there is no other fix.

That look comes from the end grain ball beat being so worn that it starts pushing back the top half of the down angle.
