Tom Wirth: my friend

Renewing an old thread. I'm a big fan of Tom's. Are there any videos of him in 1p action. Would really enjoy seeing them. And yes his pool and personality are absolutely 1st class. Proud to call Tom my friend. His book Controlled Aggression is a masterpiece.

Hi to all those who have been so kind as to post threads regarding my pool career as well as to those who have commented on the possibility of my own death which I assure you all that that rumor has been greatly overestimated. The truth is, I simply moved into God's own waiting room, Florida.

FYI: I had to change my username for AZbilliards because I lost my password and gave up trying to find a way to retrieve it through AZ. So to all my friends and anyone else who wishes to become a friend, I can now be reached with the user name TRWpool.

You should do what I did , I forgot mine so many times I made all my passwords , "what the hell is it".

It's kind of sad to read this thread. The OP is Delaware Larry aka Larry Goldman. He passed away last year.

Larry grew up in Baltimore and gained an affection for pool from his father. He was in Vietnam in the Army. He had a master's degree in sociology and worked as a social worker at the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Upon his death, Larry's belongings were given to the Veterans Administration, as per his request.

RIP, Larry.

Tom Wirth: my friend.

I took a vacation from my retirement to visit my friend Tom in Delray Beach, Florida. Back home in Maryland, we call him Tom Tom. A cold front moved in and the temperature was only 75° with a light breeze. We did a lot of pool playing, gambling at Texas Hold'em, fine dining, and Girling. Tom was better at the Girling than me. He's outgoing and has some showmanship about himself. I got to pick up the stragglers.

Tom gets by teaching pool lessons. He has a regulation pool table in his living room. He's the House Pro at one of the retirement communities. He also makes money grinding at poker. For some reason he likes to play against the regular tough players and not the tourists.

Tom was telling me that he came within the top seventh place at the Derby City Classic one pocket tournament three years in a row and that there were about 485 competitors each year. I also saw him win the Strawberry One Pocket Tournament in Washington DC, beating Grady Mathews in the finals.

With this data, there is a very high probability that Tom's ranking as a one pocket player would not be due to chance occurrence. This scientifically concludes that Tom Wirth is ranked at the top 1.03% of the universe of known one pocket players.

I was curious, does anybody know or who has heard of my friend?
I met Tom years ago when USA Billiards in Laurel, MD first opened. He was a great guy then and is a great guy now. Always a gentleman, he always had a kind word, and his knowledge of the game is staggering.

I got to see him play Grady Matthews, Allen Hopkins and many others, and I used to watch him lock horns with Ed Deska at the old Bill & Billie's in Severn, MD before it was shut down.

He always had a funny story to share, and is willing to teach those who are respectful and eager to learn.

I enjoy his one pocket videos on Facebook as well.

All-around great guy.

I will admit to getting a cold chill when I saw the title of this thread because I thought he had died!

Thank goodness for false alarms!

Thank you GC. These are the threads that I really enjoy reading. I did not realize it was 5 years old until this morning:rolleyes: Is 'Tom-Tom' still around ?

RIP to the OP back in 2012 - Larry

Have a good day,

Yes - I roomed with him once at a pro tournament back in early 90's, he can play and is a true gentleman of the game. Never knew him well but I understand one pocket was one of his favorite disciplines. Tom had some solid advice - warning me of some of the pitfalls out there in the traveling pool world. without any doubt one of the better room mates I had while competing on the pro tour. Please tell him I said hi, I too heard he passed away - so naturally I'm glad to hear he is still around. Take care.

The book is fantastic; also his shirt videos of 1P shotmaking skills are quite impressive for sure.

As new to 1P player in the last year or so, these have been invaluable to me in learning the strategy. Now if only I could execute! :)
