Why does pool attract so many broken, crazy, Degenerate, mental type people.

Our reputation for being lazy, larcenous, ne'er-do-wells is well deserved. Look at our history.
All of our heroes were gambler/hustler types who plied their trade from town to town, living hand and mouth, always looking for that next big score. Sometimes staying in grand hotels, sometimes the back seat of their car.
A few had money. Cokes, I believe, was said to be wealthy. Weenie Beenie owned a couple of hot dog stands. But in the main few had any appreciable means of support other than what they could muster on a pool table. We know that the great Lassiter passed with only eight dollars and change in his pocket.
To many of us pool players we view our heritage as a romanticized version of the old West, or the adventures Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Nothing could be further from the truth. As it turns out a life in the pool room is no life at all.
When I was fifteen and told my Parents about my first experience inside a pool hall they were dead set against me going back. A dark, smoke-filled room populated by gamblers, ex-cons, and old men who drink from bottles in paper sacks was no place for a teenage boy. They were right, you know.

Based on what I have read about Cokes, he was a near broke con man gangster running a scam with a phoney oil well they were selling shares of , when the hole started spurting oil and made them all rich.

I would pay good money for a snobbish billard club!
With clean and well-kept tables - and most importantly a quiet atmosphere without blaring music or shouting that is enforced or close-sitting tables.

Boy do I miss the good old snobby times in my bar where the bouncer would greet me and my company nicely (, not let in strange crowds and the lighting was low and the music decent and quiet. I would wear my best cashmere coat, leather handgloves and we would get drunk slowly and with style and smoke cigars all night, even my female company would join in.
No, that was not a dream.

Cheers,
A european snobby M.

Pinkies in or pinkies out?

Unfortunately I have some experience with addiction and I can easily be addicted to pool among many things in life, not all negative. However that moment when I'm playing perfect pool to where I see exactly how to make any shot and my arm executes perfectly is so similar to a wonderful drug high it's sick. I'm not a runner but I assume kind of like runners high. I have experienced this while training for fighting though on a physical level. Idk if this has anything g to do with the attraction Of low levels but I know I chase it harder than I chased the drugs :). I am off the drugs and have been for some time so if u see me around please don't cross the street run away clutch ur purse etc lol

The bar and gambling aspect plays a huge part. Pool has been allowed to become a sport for grumpy old men.
The sport is more, eh! Sportslike in Europe, but you find lots of dropouts playing pool over here too.
Having said that, there are some bright people playing pool. I actually think pool beyond a certain level, requires a fair bit of brainpower.
If pool can play on it's strengths and sellI it like an action packed variation of chess, I see bright future.

Hey, if it wasn't for Pool a broken, crazy, degenerate, mental type person like me would have no where else to go and be accepted.

According to Don Imus, politicians just ride around in limosines and snort coke and monkey around with prostitutes all day.
See, now pool players, just seem like regular suckers.

That's right. Pool players are saints compared to politicians
Pop quiz : What do you do if you are stuck on an island with a cobra, a politician and you have a gun with 6 bullets? Answer: You shoot the politician 6 times. Better to risk the snake kill you than risk the politician surviving.

I think y'all got it a bit wrong. Everyone's the same. Politicians just have money and power so of course they do that.

People don't admit this, but every single human being on the planet, including me typing this post right now, is trying to do one of only a couple of things...

-Get something for him or herself that he or she wants
-Build up his or her ego so he or she can feel better about themselves

That's it. That's what every single word out of people's mouths is trying to accomplish. That's what all their actions are getting at. It's quite annoying too it's all hard to deal with. I mean you can hardly go to your son's baseball game without one of those above motivations manifesting itself into some nastiness. We're all the same though. Pool players are no worse than any of them.

Sorry to hear your view on life in general. I learned a valuable lesson a long time ago. It goes like this, "The more you give, the more you receive." Try it on for size sometime and see if it fits.

You're proving my point. You're trying to make yourself out to be a good guy in an effort to boost your ego and self esteem. We all do it. I'm not knocking you or saying you don't give. But I am saying if you do give you do it for yourself. It's not personal towards you, it's just the truth about humans. Even your own comment bolsters the assertion... you give to get back. I'll tell you what... if you're genuinely a great guy, I'm in a real tough spot right now... can you give me a couple grand? The more you give you'll get it back, right? Or did I get that wrong? Pm me I'll give you my paypal address.

Actually you're wrong on all counts here, but you have your own belief system and I have mine. I hope yours works as well for you as mine does for me.

No, I must have misunderstood you. You said the more you give the more you get back. I'm not sure why you would not want to give if you really believe that. I must then infer you're only stating it to boost your self esteem and popularity within the group, which helps to prove my initial assertions.

True enough. It's called Reciprocity. What comes around, goes around. :)

Ha Ha, how's your self esteem these days? One thing for sure, you do have an inflated EGO!

I disagree.

It's not about him, but the message he's trying to convey.

Each Person, being a conscious self, HAS TO BE SELFISH. There is no other alternative when acting for any conscious being. All actions are for the self's satisfaction, even actions that help others. There need be no contradiction in his behavior or flaw in his character for this proposition to be real.

I typed this for myself, ultimately, AND for all of you, too. How about that?

If it were not for all the rich benefactors who pump money into chess, it would be deader than pool.
Also, not all of us old men are grumpy.

I feel sorry for people that actually think like that. They miss out on the real joys of life.

But, to disprove your theory, why did the atheist jump on the grenade? He sure wasn't doing it to make himself feel any better. Think about it.
