Why are certain parts of the country better for action than others?

Is everyone in the Northeastern United States a weak duck? I know it isn't the 80's and 90's anymore, but when you can't even get a cheap set without jibber jabber, why should I bother continuing playing pool? Getting to point I'm seriously just considering backing people and never touching a cue again because it's so frustrating. $100 is like a $1 to me. Not bragging, but everyone around here treats playing for 50 bucks like they are playing for 50K. If I went to NY or certain parts of the South, I'd get played all day long. I posted sort of a similar question a while ago, but seriously wondering why everyone wears a skirt now. Especially since pool is not even considered on the same level as tiddlywinks anymore, you'd think there would be even more reason to gamble on it than ever. I personally wouldn't pick up a cue without money on the line. It's boring. I understand the people who don't gamble for whatever reason, but I don't understand the level of nittery in general and that people actually get mad at me all the time when I ask if they want to play $5 or $10/game. If you can't afford $10/game, shouldn't you be huddled over a trash fire somewhere eating a stray dog you caught in an alley? Why are you at a pool hall? Go home. Go to church. Go to the movies. And I don't want to hear from the people that think gambling ruined pool. I already heard your argument a thousand times. It doesn't hold water. Just want a general answer to why certain parts of the country are different and maybe a little validation from some old timers that kids these days and league players are playing for the pink team. Rant over.

I love that................

phrase you used: "General nittery". Classic. I live in Oklahoma and it used to be a freakin hotbed of ACTION. Nowadays before even a $20 set both sides have to make a conference-call to be sure they're not getting robbed. The casinos got a lot of the stakehorse money so now all that's left is, as you so eloquently stated, general nittery.

Appropriate that you'd add some outdated casual homophobia to the boring and hackneyed rant against people who enjoy pool for the game and not for the high of gambling. Back to the '80s we come!

Well gee wiz - since you have so much money shouldn't you be fawning over a Picasso, or listening to Domingo or Bartoli? Why are you in a pool hall? Go to the museum. Go to the opera. Or ... go to Vegas and hit the tables since gambling floats your boat so much. /sarcasm.

Seriously though - it would be very easy for someone to take your post as being offensive - on many levels. As has been mentioned, not everyone enjoys pool /BECAUSE/ of the gambling. Some of us enjoy it as an art form, sport, or game. I could afford to go $20 a game or so - but that's not what I enjoy doing with my money. As has also been mentioned - you could take some of that money and invest in moving somewhere that is more conducive of your preferred life style. And now that MY little rant is over - I guess I'll go huddle over a trash fire somewhere and eat a hot dog.

Different parts of the country have different cultures. If you really want to gamble at Pool just head South. You'll get all the action you want and then some. Take a look at how big their Calcutta's are. 20K for first is not unusual. When you hit Louisiana hold onto your wallet. If you only want to play for $100 there, you will be the nit!

I don't know of any true gamblers that talk down to their "customers" like that. You sound like a rich, elitist, snob with no touch of reality that just likes to brag about how much money you have.

Like others already stated, if all you want is big action, there is plenty of it around. Go fly to it.

Maybe we all put a little of ourselves into these postings.
I look at pool as an 'art form' when I am doing drills over and over and rehearsing for matches. Similar to batting practice (in the stone ages) when you got a pitcher to throw you nothing but sliders low and away.
I want to be left alone in rehearsals and drills so I can enjoy the art form.
But, in a match, I see no need in wasting the enjoyment of my rehearsal time in playing for 'funsies'. Or standing there doing nothing watching while the other guy shoots. To me, that is not fun.
To me, there just has to be some kind of stakes or prize....even if it is only a crummy 5 bucks, loser pays the table time, a hug or a smooch from the pretty girl over there, lunch, a blast of Crown Royal, a car wash, whatever....but SOMETHING of value.
Just my opinion.
Keep on truckin'

Did you ever consider that maybe it is YOUR attitude that chases others away? I don't like being treated as you're treating all of us here. I wouldn't gamble with you based on what I know so far.

For lots of working people just being able to play tournaments and league is a luxury. If you are a gambler you get unlimited action from the casino.

those of us that grew up here in dallas back in the 50s
seemed to play more for the action than the pool

leagues, drills, tournaments, family fun were not why we played

things are different now, some people don't gamble
including my friends, but I miss the old days

I actually would rather not play than to not gamble
unfortunately there is getting to be very little action

i still go in an practice or play cheap just so i
will be ready if the opportunity arises

there are some semi players, kinda bullies who run down those who don't gamble

these guys are jerks, usually broke and needing a stake horse
yet they demean a working man who doesn't gamble

I admire the working man,I just don't want to play pool with him

think about poker for instance, how many people would play poker
if there were no bets,we all understand that

Gamblers feel that way about pool

The guys on here are lamenting a passing culture
the action pool room is passing away in many areas

I miss it myself,but I wouldn't let my children
within a mile of the pool room or the card room

for most people it is a way to ruin their life
either losing money, missing out on the better things such as family
or friendship

I can atthe same time sympathize with my fellow losers who miss the action
All i can offer is an invitation to come to Dallas and match up
with me,offer me the nuts and play high

No family men or working stiffs need apply, hustlers, poker players,
bookies, pimps and drug dealers are welcome to bet their money

Truth be told, without these bums we never would have much action

The only game able to win at casinos now is poker but the competition is more fierce. Blackjack has been ruined and always gives a negative return now in spite of counting or whatever...I was at a casino a month ago and their new rule was to take all of the Kings out of the (8) decks! That'll kill that action really fast. Maybe as the casinos continue shooting themselves in the head with their Disneyland family fantasies, more of that money will come back to pool where the gambler controls his own destiny?

What part on New England are you from (I'm guessing north of Boston)? If you come down to Providence I'm sure you will be able to find a suitable game.

Tired of every post turning into a fight. I wish I could actually meet some of you face to face and you could see where your big words take you. Phuck you all. Just like all the fags on FB. You're just a bunch of entitled trolls. And I'm not an elitist. But facts are facts. If you do think $100 is a lot of money, you are poor. They used to bet that per game of 9b in my room 25 years ago and as Jay said here, if you bet that in Louisiana, you are a nit. Pool is for bums and losers and broken people that like action. I am one of those people. If you aren't, then take up golf like the rest of the suburban faggots you hang around with. This forum has turned into a bunch of 16 year old girls. Save your comments about how I won't be missed. Disabling account in 5.4.3.2....

Is this how you act when you book a loser at $10/game?

Ok well you may have just stepped into a bear trap here. I'm from the south and have more gamble than you can even imagine. Here's $1000 I'll bet you on a coin flip right now. We will have Jay, blackballed or someone else reputable post a video of the flip. I call heads! Here's your action. Bet or no bet?

Ah, just like I quit gambling on pool because of such poor manners, I can also quit this thread for the same reason.

This message is hidden because MisspentYouth is on your ignore list.

Thought I'd get ahead of the "Banned" that's coming. It's a good bet.
