The long cue?

I shoot with a 61" Diviney cue and I have a 8" extension Pat made me that screws into the butt if I need some extra reach.

I am looking at the pros that I am aware of that use "long cues". We got Earl, Shane, Shaw, Hatch, Kaci and who knows who else using "long cues". I think it may be the wave of the future for dedicated pool players who find a standard 58" cue does not fit them.

I better have Diveney make me up a shorter 4" to 5" extension. It never ends........

I was quite taken with my 60 inch Huebler for several years but have recently moved back to my old Joss.

It's a good question. In the days of Willie Hoppe, it was a standard of 55 to 56 inches, though that was carom. Throughout the 70s to early 80s, 57 inches was the standard. Then Jim McDermott started making a standard 58 inch cue. Joss and Scruggs quickly followed. George didn't go off his standard 57.5 unless someone really wanted it.

Now, there are a lot of 60 inch cues out there for those who need it. And 58 inch cues are being extended by about 4 to 5 inches by mid cue extensions. And then, added to again, at the butt, by more extensions.

Well, why not, I guess. Growing up playing golf, the drivers were 43 inches in length, for those who remember. When steel and titanium heads came in, the standard pretty quickly grew to 44 and 45 inches. Most off the rack now are around 46 inches.

Guys seem to want more length, don't they...

All the best,
WW

Way of the world, people always looking to improve and innovate.

I'm a pretty big fellow (6'-4", 270lb) and when I had my first custom made it was a 60". Had a 60" made for a few reasons, but mainly I thought, since I'm a bigger guy my stroke is gonna need a little more than a measly 58" cue. Played with the 60" for a few years, and absolutely loved (and still do) the cue. One day at the hall I got into a game with one of the better One Pocket players, and after loosing a set or two I asked him if he had any suggestions on how to improve my game. He said absolutely... MAKE MORE BALLS! after I threw him the middle finger and we had a laugh, he asked "why are you so stretched out?" and suggested the shorten up my bridge hand and move my stance and cue around. When I did all that, I realized the longer cue was messing me up and started playing with one of the standard length cues I have, I feel it really improved my game.
My latest custom is a 57 1/2" at the suggestion of my cue maker, been playing with it for about a year and couldn't be happier.
It's probably all in my head, but I believe the shorter cue just moves the rock with better control. I asked the maker why 57 1/2"? "George's cues were that length"

I say do what you are most comfortable with, don't worry to much about what the other yahoos are doing.

I'm 6,5 foots tall and my both custom Prathers I played with for many years were 60" long. Here is my player I'm using now http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=463154.
For me it's just not comfortable to play with standard length cue especially when it comes to power strokes, long draw shots. With standard cue I just feel lack of follow through. On the other hand I don't remember fairly tall and big Mike Massey using extremely long cues or extensions and he could do some amazing powerful strokes very few are capable. So it is more about your technique fitting your natural abilities. The best way is to try, feel and see how it works just for you.

My table at home is in a room that is too small for it... I dont have enough room there for a 58inch cue, let alone another 5+ inches.
