My point in the previous reply is that telling someone to just hit the point on the object ball farthest from the pocket is only marginally more helpful than telling them to just hit the ball into the pocket.I am not one to ascribe to aiming "systems." I have seen them confuse more players than help them. My approach is very basic. I believe PSR takes care of most of the things that bothers players. Hit a million balls and squirt and deflection are accounted for unconsciously. Yes, I'm obviously a feel player.
I wouldn't say I ascribe to aiming systems either, but maybe we have a different definition of what constitutes an aiming system. I believe that teaching a handful of concepts such as throw, tangent lines, 30 degree rule, playing into the shot line, etc. can help beginners get off the ground faster than just having them hit balls until they can run racks.
To get back to the original point of this thread, yes, there are some shots that come up in some form more often than others, so there is validity in practicing them (especially the difficult ones) more often. A lot of players (myself included) avoid practicing shots and position routes that they struggle with because it can be disheartening, but eventually you just have to get past that and practice those shots if you want to improve.
