Most Common Shot In 9/10-Ball

I am not one to ascribe to aiming "systems." I have seen them confuse more players than help them. My approach is very basic. I believe PSR takes care of most of the things that bothers players. Hit a million balls and squirt and deflection are accounted for unconsciously. Yes, I'm obviously a feel player.
My point in the previous reply is that telling someone to just hit the point on the object ball farthest from the pocket is only marginally more helpful than telling them to just hit the ball into the pocket.

I wouldn't say I ascribe to aiming systems either, but maybe we have a different definition of what constitutes an aiming system. I believe that teaching a handful of concepts such as throw, tangent lines, 30 degree rule, playing into the shot line, etc. can help beginners get off the ground faster than just having them hit balls until they can run racks.

To get back to the original point of this thread, yes, there are some shots that come up in some form more often than others, so there is validity in practicing them (especially the difficult ones) more often. A lot of players (myself included) avoid practicing shots and position routes that they struggle with because it can be disheartening, but eventually you just have to get past that and practice those shots if you want to improve.

all true but this particular shot is so easy if you are having trouble with it your stroke or something is amiss.

All those rules mean little to me. I'm not saying they don't exist if you want them to. Hit a million balls and you will incorporate them into your game automatically. Clinical thinking such as you mentioned only cause doubt in my game. See the line, know where you want to get to, do your PSR, get down, take your strokes and shoot.

When you get right down to it there are only 3 shots in the game and variations (angle of cut) of them. Inside cut, outside cut, and straight in. If you want the ball being on or next to a rail to bother you then it will. How complicated you make it is up to you.

I wasn't able to view the picture earlier, but when I did it was exactly the shot I thought it was. I would agree that particular shot and subtle variations come up very frequently in rotation games. It can be a tough shot especially while grying to move the cue ball in a particular way. One drill i have done for this shot is to set up this shot along with its mirror image on the other end of the table and try to make the ball and get center of table position on the other ball. Also if pocketing the ball is a problem I try to imagine a pocket in the middle of the rail and pretend im cutting it in there. It helps me visualize it as an easier shot.

I am convinced that this shot is just about the most important shot in the game of 9-Ball of 10-Ball. It seems like it just comes up literally all the time. Maybe not this EXACT shot but something very, VERY similar.

In my opinion, if you want to be a top level player you better master this shot and be able to put the CB about anywhere on the table after you pocket the 1-ball.

What do you posters think?

Thank God I can still make that shot! :)
