WTF man..... I quit drinking about 6 weeks ago (to help with my weight loss efforts) and since then my pool game has gone to shit. Zero control, missing shots, second guessing, frustrated. If something doesn’t change it might be time to hang it up....

Also add in the fact that I starting working out and my entire body seems whacked.

Hang in there, your game will adjust you just need to get some sober practice in so you can find your confidence without the liquid courage.

I have recently decided to reduce my drinking while practicing and playing seriously, there was an adjustment period.

Quitters aren't winners.

I assume you drank beer. Very fattening. Switch to Makers Mark and ice. Good stuff. You do have to use restraint and common sense though! Lol

Your game hasn't gone to shit... you're finally sober enough to realize how you've been playing.

Congrats to you for quitting! It will take you some time to adjust. All areas of your life will improve if you stick with it. You will notice money first, then health and then control in areas like pool. I quit 6 years ago and have never felt better. Work on your problem areas in life and everything else will fall in line. Your relationships with some will change because you don't have the booze in common anymore. Other relationships will strengthen because people will notice the positive change in you. Take some of the old booze money and pay for lessons from a PBIA instructor, if you can get Scott Lee, you will have one of the best. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can stick with it. It sucks for the first 2-3 months, but, I promise it gets better.

Oh Lordy, I didn't want to hear this. Recently retired and joined the APA for 1st time intending to get on team at Pool Hall and not a bar, hoping to quit drinking. Damn, LOL

Nope, i drink vodka. It's the food i eat after drinking that kills me. Plus, anymore, 2 drinks and i have a headache. I don't have any plans to start again.

Yeah, life wasn't bad before. But at 250 on a 5'10" frame is just too much. Eating better, going to the gym, feeling pretty good. Pool game is complete crap now. I'm a 7/9 in APA and have been playing for many years, never have i had a slump like this. Hope it works itself out soon. Tks

I'll take the healthier life style over playing good pool.....BUT, it's a close call sometimes. LOL.

You talk about it like you had an alcohol problem. If that's the case, you are doing the right thing. But having a couple of drinks once a week can do more good then harm. Moderation folks.

It's not the booze , or lack thereof. It's the working out/exercise that's messing with you. Muscle memory specifically. Your brain says do this...but your body is stronger ,(weaker right after a workout), then before. There will be improvement in a few more weeks. Hang in there. Matt D.

I quit drinking years ago when diagnosed diabetic. Overall, I'd say life is better. Now that I'm 74, the inevitable of things going wrong with my body have happened, all have changed my pool game. I think my pool game actually improved after I quit the sauce though...not right away, but it did improve.

One thought..if you find yourself rejecting a place to eat because they don't have a bar, you may very well have a drinking problem. I was in that spot, so quitting for health reasons was a good thing.

I feel for you and I hope it improves soon. I'm experiencing a similar dilemma - I had shoulder replacement surgery nearly 2 years ago, and I've been very frustrated waiting for it to improve to the point that I can play more than 2 or 3 times a week, for 2-3 hours at a time, which is all I've been able to the play the past 2 years. As a right handed player, my left shoulder is the one that has to extend out away from my body to the address position countless times during a session, and I've been discouraged in thinking maybe it won't get any better.

However, just in the last month, all of a sudden, for no explainable reason, I've been playing pain free and upped my sessions to 4-5 times a week - playing 2 or even 3 days in a row pain free for the first time in years. Downside is I'm playing worse than I played when I was only able to play/practice half as much. I'm hoping it's just a phase I'm going through, but I would have thought it would be just the opposite - that playing / practicing more would result in me improving my current level. I've been so discouraged I even just switched back from my Revo shaft to my Vantage shaft, which didn't seem to help any, at least not yet.

Apparently, having higher expectations for what we hope should be, are not always the case, at least in the short term. I've learned over 60+ years, that patience is often well rewarded, and that's what we need to remember!

I've gone through this a few times. Not necessarily from quitting drinking but from working out or losing weight.

Something that helps me is to have a longish practice session where I just fire balls in. I don't care if I make them or miss. I don't care about the leave. I just start firing balls. The faster the better. See it. Shoot it. Bam. That's it.

This turns the 'editor' in your brain off. The editor is the voice that's second guessing your instincts.

Pretty soon you'll be making everything just like after a drink or two.

It'll take a little time to be able to bring that to matches but it'll happen.
