"Matty" cue - cuemaker info, anyone?

This is my beloved baby, my 1948 Matty which I bought from the original owner in 1978. I've searched for years for any info on the cue maker with no luck. The original owner had almost no info on "Matty", other than he was a cue maker from the Baltimore area. The cue has been refinished and I put the alligator wrap on myself @ a year or so ago. other than that, as far as I know, it looks pretty much the same as when brand new. Thanks for any help. Spoiler alert! After 40 years, MYSTERY SOLVED!!! YES!

We should consider alternative spellings unless the cue is clearly marked "Matty".

Maddy?

Short for Maddison or Madison maybe?

Maybe other possibilities?

Post-war Baltimore. That could help. Maybe Janes or Phillippi know? Maybe Stroud since he was building cues there 40-50 years ago?

Wow. That cue does not look like it was built in 1948. More like 1968.

Not saying you are wrong, just not the "look" I expected at all.

I would love to know the pin and what's under the bumper.

Agreed, 48 seems really old. The pin thread might help and maybe some close ups of the joint. Its almost got a "Huebler'esk" long buttcap...

OP...does it say Matty on the cue?

Huebler-esque...yeah...with shades of National, and also others like Mayer, Meucci, RCH, and more....

Mid-sixties to mid-seventies look about it.

It will be interesting to see if we can pin this down.

Could be a 48 I guess...just really took me by surprise.

CD - I've googled every possible spelling for it with "cue" or "pool", etc in the google request and it's never turned up anything. And, I did ask Dan Janes about it when I spoke with him ( when I ordered my Joss in 16 ) and he had never heard of anyone named Matty or Maddy, etc, period, let alone in Baltimore. Bob ( original owner ) told me way back when that he thought the guy's name was Matt and his nickname was Matty. But he wasn't certain.

As for the age, Bob was a straight shooter, didn't bullshit and he told me about the Rich Riggi thing and him buying it brand new when Riggi didn't want it and that he was just 19 when he bought it. That was 78 and Bob was in his early 50s/late 40s then, so... I didn't have any reason to doubt him. He was very offhand about it, as would be anyone recalling something from years before. Also, Ray seemed pretty certain it was a very old cue. He made the comment about it being older than me when I was in my mid 50s. Dunno. It used to drive me half crazy not being able to find out anything about it but these days, I've kinda learned to just roll with it.

***WOW***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's my cue!!! HOLY S**T!!!

But I bought mine in late summer of 78, and it was no spring chicken at that point. It was well taken care of but it had mileage on it. There was no way the cue was 10 years old or less at that point. But no, it doesn't say Matty or anything else anywhere on the cue.

Hell, I couldn't care less if it's not from 48. Now I just wanna know what cue it is!

Hey Stake - The images you uploaded of the Huebler / Meucci are gone now. Did you take them down? If so, can you put them back up? I was going to download them to my HD. Thanks again. I can't believe that! That's my cue. I've never seen anything even close to mine and there it is. I'm stunned.

It also looks like the "Matty" cue has a nylon insert.

Relatively few have used that. Huebler more than anybody.

Also Lishan, and Slade used nylon.

It does look very much like the cue you posted. Meucci worked in the Huebler shop back then, and sold Meucci brand cues out of the Huebler shop.

Additionally, Matty sounds a lot more like Meucci than it does Huebler.

So, it could be a Meucci as well.

Right now I am betting this was originally sold as a Meucci and was made in the Huebler shop around 1975. How it got located to Baltimore, I don't know.

Bob Meucci previously worked at National, and hence the resemblance and the reason I pointed out National as a possibility.

Im not a big Huebler historian but the buttcap was the key, not exactly sure the model but Huebler and Meucci both started around 1974-1975 I think. Does the cue have a nylon/phenolic or brass insert in the shaft?

Stake and CD -

I looked EXTREMELY closely at the image Stake just put back up and that is absolutely my cue. I have NO doubt whatsoever. When I had it refinished, I had the cuemaker who did it for me paint over the white rings at the joint and above the butt cap. He did a perfect job. So, the rings on the image of the Huebler are identical to mine before it was refinished. Plus, my images are a bit blurry ( my kid's phone camera ) but the wood rings are identical to mine. Even the color of the wood above the butt cap and the forearm is identical to mine.

So, now the question is, I guess, do I change my sig to say "Huebler"? Or "Meucci" ?

You guys ROCK!!! You have NO idea how much this mean to me. Wow... I feel like a new Dad all over again.

Ahhhh the painted over rings, that was a puzzler lol. As for the logo I doubt you'll ever get rid of the cue from the way it sounds, so if it were I, I wouldnt bother with adding anything. It almost makes the story more interesting if someone ever asks what it is :thumbup:

Hell, I'd never sell this cue, even at GUNPOINT! I only paid 75.00 for it but I wouldn't take 300.00 for it, even if really is worth much less. It plays better than any cue I ever owned and I've had a bunch. My Tillis played great ( I bought this one to replace the Tillis when it was stolen out of my car ) and so did my Rambow, both Palmers I had, even the Viking... but none hit a ball like this one. I'm gonna be buried with it ( and that's if I'm not cremated. If I am, it's going ashes to ashes right along with me! )

I'm changing the sig. So now I have three Meuccis.
