World Cup of Pool 2018 Thread

So weird, I turned it off when China went up 5-0 and were playing near perfect pool. Sounds like the wheels fell off after that. I was ready to anoint Wu as the world's best player.

They still won 7-4 so the wheels never quite fell off although it looked like they might after being up 6-0.

China B even with 4 dry breaks is horse ****ing the Philippines. They basically have that cue ball on a string.

I don't think anyone saw that final score as even remotely possible.
Them boys don't miss.

Also, Alex Lely is hands down my favorite commentator. He's made this tournament an extremely knowledgeable learning/teaching event. Every match he is a part of is not only engaging, but I feel, is like watching with an instructor.

With all the elements of this production...the ref hand racked breaks...no crazy break rules...winner breaks...the caliber of players at the table...the shot clock...the HD camera work and sound production...the Lely Commentary...and then the unpredictable turn of events and pressure cooker situations...

This is one of the most entertaining pool productions I've ever seen. Very fun. ESPN doesn't know what they are missing.

I haven't gotten to watch all the matches yet but the bad teams/players are sooooooooo bad this year, WTF?

Usually Genipool youtube channel does a "Best Shots of " compilation after the event, this year they could definitely do a worst shots one.

Also the poorest attended Matchroom event I have ever seen.

Yeah the arena setup is crap. Table is crap. Sound is crap. Players are crap.

Pool is nowhere near snooker yet.

Looks like the table has pretty tight pockets, but very shallow shelves. Balls don't hang up in these pockets very often. They just fall in if they get inside the jaws. The table seems to be rolling pretty true and banking okay, so I have no problem with it. The camera work is spotty, showing some shots well and others not so good. Decent commentary, I like Alex and Ted together.

I thought the matches were pretty entertaining, the ones that I watched. I think most of the countries have fielded good competitive teams. It's getting more interesting to me now that there are only eight teams left, all of them very strong. Team Philippines couldn't get un-tracked in their match with China B. Everything went wrong for them - bad rolls, poor shot choices, missed position and on and on. To China's credit, they took advantage of the Philippines mistakes and made them pay.

I'd like to see USA play well later and give a strong Chinese Taipai team a run for their money, but they are the underdogs imo. I really liked the China A team, but when I found out that got weak against Australia and had trouble closing out the match, that means they are beatable. All and all a good show and great for Pool.

These pockets are too forgiving. Encouraging sloppy play.

It's like having bucket sized holes at the Ryder Cup or flat roads at Tour de France.

The pockets are playing like a tournament pocket should play. They appear to be a bit tighter than 4.5", but the facings are perfect. You can cheat the pocket and manufacture angles, allowing for the players to get creative.

I see you are a snooker fan from previous comments so I understand why you can see these pockets as buckets, but this is pool and you should be able to do more and make shots from areas you wouldn't even try on a snooker table.

I understand that pool pockets can't be as tight as snooker. And that's fine.

But look at this shot :grin-square:: https://youtu.be/C4qa2dqvuLI?t=240

Schedule on the website says 18:00 (6 am east coast) for the second quarter final, but the go90 app says 11 am?

Did they move the time schedule around?

Well the website shows they are playing now with USA up 3-1 over Taiwan.
But no live stream on the go90 app.

Anyone else watching live?

Btw, who picks the players for each country ?

And if team A break and miss. The team B can send any of the 2 players at the table or in particular order ?

Ha! I can see your point. Those rails are nice and soft between the 2 and 3 diamond. On my home table that ball would've not even seen the inside of the corner pocket hitting that far up on the rail no matter what the speed.

Do we know the brand of cushion on that table?

I was wondering that myself. It seems like each country has it's own rules, or matchroom grants players the right to choose.

The commentators states earlier that Jayson Shaw was given his choice of partner. In the past Shane was allowed to pick his partner.

I believe the Dutch national team picks on rankings, since they have an actual billiard federation and sponsored players. Another poster said Nick Van Den Berg retired, so the guy playing with Niels was the #3 ranked player in the Netherlands.

I would like to know how the countries get picked.

In the past there was a team from Portugal or India (raj hundal) and other various smaller countries have popped up like Romania, Norway, malta, and South Africa

You guys surely know about soft pockets on new cloth.
You see it at snooker also....balls slide in that wouldn’t have a chance if the cloth was two
months old.

USA just lost 7-5 to Taiwan....
They had a lead, but I dont know how they lost it.

Live stream wasn't working for me

Your crazy. I’m seeing balls ran up the rail hitting 2 diamonds away and still going in. My valley with ridge back rails wouldn’t allow that to go in. No one a pro table should

That's not the pockets fault...it's the rails.
I have Kleber cushions on my gold crown and if a ball hits that far up the rail it's deflected enough that it won't even get to the inside facing of the corner pocket. The WCP table has seriously soft cushions and of course new cloth on the rails, that will make any ball slide if hit with pocket speed.

Regarding the pocket itself. Those appear to be just shy of 4.5" (possibly 4.25") and that's a good size for pro cut pockets in a professional tournament.

Do you think those are 5" corners at the world cup of Pool? Are you advocating for tighter than 4.25" pockets?

I hate seeing balls hit up the rail almost 2 diamonds and still drop. No properly setup table should do that. I have seen that a number of times this tournament.
