Opponents with headphones

I just wonder. Back in the old days what would we have thought of other players who would unfold a newspaper and read that while we're playing? I suppose that pretty much anybody would have found that to be very rude. It sort of shows that you don't take your opponent seriously in some way too.

Practising alone is a totally different story and I would never be offended by people wearing headphones doing that.

But another person demonstrating their lack of interest in your gameplay .... I don't take that well.

Tap tap tap

( and not just because you play with a Meucci :D )

That’s not why they wear headphones.

No need to be so sensitive.

It’s a requirement

But really shouldn’t come up often enough that it warrants a complaint

If you’re constantly 3 fouling your opponents you might want to find better competition.

Hell, if you cannot run out in 9 ball with two BIH, you might want to find another sport.

Yes seriously.

I’ve played plenty of nine ball and can count the number of times I’ve had to talk to my opponent on one hand.

I guess nobody every pushes out when you play or asks someone to watch a hit. For me it is annoying trying to get my opponent's attention to tell them I am going to push out instead of saying it where they can hear me.

Say you do want someone to watch a hit but opponent shoots before you can get their attention to find someone. Is it automatically a good hit no matter what because they had headphones on and did not know you wanted someone to watch the shot? If you try to get their attention can they accuse you of sharking?

I may not talk to every opponent but it does happen several times during any tournament or league night.

I may be old-fashioned. Agreed.

However, the only other reasons I saw here for earbuds:

1) They don't like the background music or sound. Now, who is sensitive? I had to listen to a lot of Country music back then and I am a Rock guy. So what. Even some really unnerving pop music. And I had to get used to the background chatter in pool rooms too. Unless you always play in your own basement that is part of the game.

2) The opponent sharking you. Hmm. Again, this may be a case in some extreme circumstances where earbuds might be a suitable countermeasure. But I don't think we are talking about those rare scenarios, are we?

Any kind of headphone or text messaging during play just tells me one thing: my opponent does not take the least interest in me and my gameplay. He prefers to ignore me so why shouldn't I ignore him by just not playing him at all?

Was this your first time gambling?

Have you never played 9 ball before?

Just curious how many questions you had to ask the guy.

That's what amused me about the guy's post. Every time he tried to shark the guy with the headphones he got all pissy.

Maybe a "do not disturb" tshirt would be preferred. I remember Archer playing Earl once and Archer told Earl to shut up because "the only way you can win is by sharking people". "When I'm at the table you shut up".

When you want to push

Just take your hand and move it forward in a pushing motion

That seems to be an acceptable non verbal way to indicate a push out.

You might have a point about watching a hit except it doesn’t happen every game.

I've been looking for another sport for some time now.... :p

Tiddlywinks. It's the S**T!!!

And NOBODY wears headphones!

What he said, amen and tap tap tap.

Your opponent has to be looking at you for you to move forward your hand in a pushing motion.

If someone is in their own world listening to music it can be tough to get their attention when saying their name does not work. This comes from experience as several players always wear headphones when playing in tournaments etc.

The players with the headphones usually aren't looking at the table when I am shooting. Having to get their attention to let them know it is their turn is another one which becomes annoying.

Yeah, seriously... been gambling on 9 ball close to 30 years.

The responses here suggest a divide between those defending headphones and those that don't want to play someone wearing them, simple as that.

Fully agreed.. why should I have to go to the extra trouble of getting someone's attention, make me work harder?

No this is about people that lack the ability to not be bothered by the small things.

I was under the impression people wore headphones because they are bothered by small things, This in turns bothers the people who are not wearing headphones because they have to deal with the people wearing headphones.
