Tips on south west cues

Hello everyone
I bought a south west, in April 2018, and I've been playing about 6 times a month since I bought this cue. It seems to me that the triangle tip, that came on the cue, from SW, has worn down at a faster rate, than I want to see....
Dont want to send the shaft back to SW, to install a new tip, and have a lengthy wait to get it back....
Any suggestions for tips to put on my SW ?
Why do the triangle tips that SW installs, play so well ?
I used to play with kamui tips, on my schon, before I upgraded to my SW
thanks for looking

I don't know what they use but i like em

I put triangle on all of my other cues

i have had over 100 south west cues and never heard anyone mention that the south west tips wore down quicker

i doubt that they do

any body can replace the tips, that is most anyone

i use a fella named ben in dallas
or larry vigus puts new ones on for me

sometimes you get a bad tip from triangle,
but not often

I asked in 2015. What tip came on my South West? Laurie replied back that they used Triangle and had for many years. The original tips that came on my cue held up very well.

I thought they used Le Pro's.

Hey Johnny,

Ever sw I've owned that supposedly had the original tip had a triangle tip.

I've owned 4 sw cues. Never ordered one direct from them. Just to long of a wait. I actually got real good deal on two them (couple going through divorce had two and sold them roughly half price). Both of them had triangle tips that looked like new.

The other two, well, I actually lost money on. Not much considering I dropped them and damaged both (lost $600 on each), but enough...lol... to make me remember it. They too, had triangle tips on when I purchased them.

I have a buddy that has A TON (15 or 16) of sw cues. All of them are beautiful but he has a couple that most would actually kill for, absolutely amazing cues. Anyways, he has always had lepro tips, nothing else.

Now I'm curious. I'll ask him what his cues came with since he bought almost all of his from them, other than the four he bought from me (changed tips as soon as he purchased them) and two or three of the others. Yep, he likes him some sw cues.

Btw, I look forward to playing some. Shouldn't be to much longer. Still waiting on doc's office to let us know the appointment day/time.

Expecting it to be within next 2 or 3 weeks.

I HAVE had Triangles that broke down faster but NOT on my two Southwest cues and not on any cues I've owned since. Both were on an Andy Gilbert and I had to mess with them EVERY time I played with the cue. Eventually sold it before changing the tips. Only time I've ever had that problem.

Hello Rake,
The only experience I've personally had was when I lived in Denver from '99 - '06 and a guy let me play a few racks with his, it wasn't Danny Medina but I did watch Danny numerous times. He said all he used was Le Pro's but I had understood him to say it came with a Le Pro. I thought I had seen others post on here the same.

I started out with Le Pro's and Triangle's and I'm back to both of those now after trying numerous "new" tips. I do still use a milkdud from pooldawg8 on 1 shaft & it's a great tip. I also have an original Chandivert Champion on my micarta ferruled Rick Howard.

I play Sundays at Bumpers nand Tuesday nights at Poppas but I can go play anytime so let me know when you're down here.
I recently got bumped up to a level 6 in APA but I think I'm just a mediocre 5, just so you'll know to take it easy on me! lol

There are probably players that had a SW, went to Schon and thought that was an upgrade ;)

Why not just head to a local cue maker / repair guy and check on his/her stock? Thing with Triangles and some other tips is that in a box you may find a large mix of quality. Some people dump them in water and see how they float, or bounce them, or do a seance over them to find the good ones. Maybe they should do like they do with that fancy monkey butt coffee, feed it to some animal, whatever gets pooped out is collected and used. I think if you try a Kamui on your SW you may like it. For a single layer tip, I really like the Ki-Tech ones from Outsville. Had a soft put on one of my cues, was amazing feeling, and held it's shape the whole time I used it.

It has been 7 years since I owned a SW, so perhaps my information is out of date. For quite a few years, I used to send my shafts back to SW for new tips. I liked the idea of having them inspect the ferrules while the tips were removed in case deeper repair was needed. In those days (and I would imagine today as well), Laurie ran an organized shop. She would tell me which day they were doing tips. If the shafts got to them before that day, they would be on their way back soon after. Otherwise, it would take an extra week.

I've played with both. In my opinion, Schons play better than SW. Way more consistent from cue to cue. My opinion only.

I am somewhat confused with the term Tip Wear...
This isn't a natural phenomenon... without scuffing what is wearing?
If chalk is causing wear, the tip is certainly suspect.

I have thrown away several Le Pros and Triangle tips over the years; some just don't stack up.
The one layer firm tips provided a great firm hit and they are best tips "for the money"; no one wants to send you a new cue and have it feel mushy with a soft tip.

I really doubt a builder expects a user be sold on whatever tip they install; a few exceptions could be Searing considering Dennis Searing designed and sponsors a tip and Bluegrass that specifically state there cues come with Thoroughbred tips.

That said, there's no reason not to determine what tip works best for you.
IMO, confidence is the key on tips, get some from whatever tip gives it to you!
