Settling payouts between backers and horses

All things being equal, and we aren’t talking about staking SVB, just a regular situation: you back someone for a set and they win. In the same night, you back the same person again, and they lose. Do you pay the horse their cut for the first set? Again, this is just assuming all normal life things, the two bets were close or equal amounts, blah blah blah.

No, in the absence of a previous understanding to the contrary, your horse's cut should be based on what they earn during the total session.

100% agreed. The session ended by paying his horse his cut before the next match, then it
becomes another session. Now if you were taking all comers, and at the end of the night you decide to
split up the money, well then the session is then over.

learn to make your deals clear or get the worst of it. but if you back people you are a bad gambler anyway and will get broke if you do it enough.

Stakehorses are the dumbest of all gamblers period. Betting,say,1000 per set and splitting 50/50, you have to win 2 out of 3 to break even lol. Try beating those odds.

It depends on how the first set ended , if that match was over , the horse should have been paid.
If the guy quit but was still negotiating a next set then no.
If it's 2 different people then yes , horse should have been paid after first set.

This needs to be clearly clarified between the player and stakehorse beforehand any partnership starts. Most smart backers keep a running +/- total tally for their player, not only for the night over numerous possible matchups but over the long term relationship / contract between the player and backer. As long as the player's overall tally is in the negative, the backer does not pay him anything.

In this scenario you describe, if the backer made the mistake to pay off his player his share of the score after winning the initial wager that night, then the player must dip in to those winnings to pay off his losses if he then lost the next matchup. Any arrangement other than that is a very inexperienced and ignorant backer who is just asking to get dumped on.

You should have made it clear, sounds like you held on to the money after the first set.

Would be an easy call to just say we won one lost one so nobody wins.

But you might feel obligated if you didn't make things clear to the player, but in reality the player should know he shouldn't be profiting while you are taking a loss.

I had a situation a couple months ago where I went on a fri-sun trip, got 2nd in a tournament and there was a few people in on it and out of the norm they split the money with me, I didn't say anything. Later that night we play a money match and win and they split that, the next day we go play a match and lose all the profits basically.. on the ride home I gave them what I had won, like 300.

But before I gave it back to them I did brag about how I at least made some money...
