Another Difficult Shot

Video link at end.

I was able to clean the crap off of my table and I decided to tackle this shot. My normal disclaimers, of: The diagramming tool is not a 9' table, I got the ball positions as close as I could get them, and until you are personally at the table facing a shot, its hard to see angles with video, pictures, or diagramming tools.

For the video, I shot in order:
-drag draw low outside - This was very hard to pocket, and very hard to get position.
-inside only - This was medium hard to pocket, and medium hard to get position
-top only - This was easy to pocket, impossible to get position (hits 4 every time)
-high outside - This was easy to pocket, easy to get position (but further away)
-outside only - This was easy to medium to pocket, medium to get position

I only showed the shots where the ball was pocketed. Some shots were good position, some came up short.

For MY money, I'd shoot the high outside, and take a longer shot on the 2. I'd be curious to see how a pro would play this.

Also, I think this entire out is very difficult. I wonder what the odds of a top pro getting all the way out would be. You have to decide if you want a steep angle on the 2 to go back and forth for the 3, or a shallow angle on the 2 to hold for the 3. You also have to decide on the 3 ball if you want to be straight in to draw straight back for the 4, or a sharp angle to come across table for the 4. All of these combinations are possible, and how you hit the 1 may determine the rest of your choices.

Thanks for watching.

Also I want to add, the first few times I tried the drag draw outsides spin shot (before I started recording), my CB got behind the cluster of balls, the same as DCP did on his opening post of this thread. I really had to dial the speed WAY down, and really focus on a low outside hit. In fact, I was hitting it too slow, and the CB was dying short of position. It was hard to find a middle ground where the CB got to a good spot. Very easy to under hit or over hit the CB. It was a hard shot, for sure.

Thank you for the trouble you went to.

It seems the extra trouble using extreme left or drag to the shot increases the difficulty with, as you mention, only a moderate improvement in position.

Like most of us non professionals we are better off with a good shot we can produce consistently then a perfect shot it takes multiple tries to make. It is the old concept of "don't let perfect be the enemy of good".

Using a center ball hit should develop about the same roll as high and somewhat less than drag. Avoiding the extreme edge of the cue ball makes the shot a LOT easier. I would opt for center ball with a moderate side spin. Just because you can go extreme with center ball doesn't mean you have to and since you have a lot of distance there is no need to move up on the cue ball which increases the effect of an off center hit and doesn't really add to the forward roll, which would be a negative anyway. Going low increases the difficulty as well and the impact is not major.

Those are just my thoughts. For some players none of these concepts are a challenge and for them the perfect shot is the logical choice.

Hey DCP, what’s your comment on my video of your shot?

First, and please, put some shoes on when you make videos. Ok? It just doesn't seem right to see a guy playing pool with no shoes on.

And thank you for the video. I agree with your choice, the slight high and outside might be the best way. I guess I automatically thought hitting it low and coming around would be the way to play the shot.

Hey Skip?
Glad you think I keep the Forum going. This forum is a source of enjoyment, learning, and entertainment for me.

DCP cracks me up. He starts a thread but seems to check out somewhere along the line and he starts another one. :) It is good for the forum though, it gets things going.

Thanks for your comment and feedback on the shot. It does hurt a little spending a lot of effort on a shot, video editing, etc, to not get any response from the person who asked about the shot in the first place. Oh well, at least if this shot comes up for me ever in a game I will be better prepared for it.

Well, nine days went by without a response to this thread so I assumed it was done. I don't check these Forums every day. Again, I appreciate your efforts, it was very helpful.

Just put some shoes on.

And that causes a lot of people to attack us. Claim we are wasting forum space along with other issues.

This is why we need 1 or 2 more Mods and why I keep volunteering.

The whole world seems to be mad about something, not just here. It is pretty easy to skip a thread that doesn't interest you.
