APA Sponsorship of the Mosconi Cup

If you ask me, they were smart for being a sponsor. Maybe they will get the attention of a few people over there to start up an APA league. You never know right?

and honestly, if the people running the BCAPL, ACS or any of these leagues were smart, they would have done the same thing. Think about it, the system that everyone always talks about is this Fargo rating system that the BCAPL uses. There apparently are way more serious players in the BCAPL. So why not use the mosconi cup to advertise that system and your league?

If you're in any amateur pool league you probably shouldn't be doing it for the money so I wouldn't worry about it

The APA was heavily involved with 9 Ball (the infomercial). And they tried to tell people in the "movie" that the APA was a stepping stone into being a pro pool player. So if that is their sales pitch sponsoring the Mosconi Cup was a good idea/investment. They should try to get the team players to state how they went through the APA ranks prior to going pro (even if it's all fiction). Might get more folks in the pool rooms competing..

not all marketing is targeted or designed to convert to hard sales. Some is done to increase brand recognition. This is still marketing, not a donation.

Precisely. I'm very glad they circulate some of their earnings back into the pro scenes.

Just a thought!

Apa has roughly 1/2 million members!

But, there cyber game sucks!

No emails or links to the stream!

No where on the APA Facebook page links to the matches ! No APA tweets about the mosconi cup! No Instagram!

My point is that pool is in the dark ages and desperately needs to improve the use of social media!

Both matchroom and APA should be embarrassed by 2k viewers for the free streaming!

Kevin hart gets 30 million Instagram followers ... two major companies in television and media relations should hold their heads in disgrace...

Uh oh, I can see it now: The APA Movie - 9 Ball 2 - The Mosconi Cup
Jennifer Baretta beats Ralf Souquet in the final match for the trophy in front of a
Madison Square Garden sell out crowd

I saw Facebook notifications fairly regularly.

And the times that I was watching, there were 10k watching. Not a huge number, and we don't know if that number was combined with the Matchroom facebook feeds as well...

It was a simulcast and it's the same number across various streams.

Are You A Screenplay Writer???:D:D:D

I imagine that the APA saw that Matchroom has a chance to change the pool landscape in the US and figured out that it would be good if they were allied with them. If the US Open 9-Ball gets serious TV coverage in the US and the APA is shown as a sponsor, it could do a lot for them. Or not. Maybe they're planning for the future and building a relationship.

The APA was involved with the Camel Tour back when that looked like it might do something really good for pool. That did not end well. Sometimes you place your bets and you take your chances.

The APA evidently had thousands of dollars laying around, that us amateurs paid for, to send to a Pro players event. I'm confused.... that's equivalent to Pee Wee Football giving their money away to the NFL instead of to their own players. Hell if I'm the APA I'd use my "extra cash" to buy every team captain a nice APA winter coat, not send it to a group of Pro players who have nothing to do with my organization. What's to gain? Just want to understand why that's a wise decision both financially and ethically.

(I'm a huge supporter of the APA. This is not intended to be a bash.)

There are a ton of posts out there that say "leagues should support pro players and events". And when they do, this is the result, nothing anyone does will make everyone happy LOL

There is also such a thing as advertising.

I’m not sure what’s wrong with his facebook but I got a notification every time they started streaming. Apa and pocket poker sent me notifications.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the camel tour broke up because of all the idiots suing cigarette manufacturers pretending like they had no idea smoking was addictive and bad for you lol They all pulled all thier sponserships from all sports as I remember it. It’s a shame because that was the last time pool had a sponsor that wasn’t in the business of pool with very deep pockets that invested money in our game.

You're wrong. It's a long story that begins and ends with Don Mackey. It's all about greed, a common theme in stories of this kind.

The master settlement agreement (the tobacco class action lawsuit) did require tobacco companies and their brands to limit their sponsorship of professional and amateur sports. R J Reynolds had to revisit their decision to sponsor pool every year, and eventually they eliminated it. Don Mackey made that a very easy decision for them, but if not for the MSA, they probably would have continued.

I assume you mean they would have continued pool promotion without Mackey or perhaps without the PBTA. There was still the problem of the $400,000 missing from the PBTA prize funds.
