No Rule Change for DCC One Pocket This Year

During the seniors one pocket event last fall in Houston, the last day wasn't able to finish after 3 in a row of the race to 3 matches lasted 5+ hours and after 15.5 hours of straight through play they decided not to finish.. These were all very well know players. One of the first matches of the tournament lasted 6-1/2 hours...lol

What do expect when you get a bunch of old farts together playing 1pocket?

Maybe they're going to wait until the tournament runs 2 days long instead of just 1 day long before making any changes.

It already runs several days starting on Sunday.

I'm not sure, but with the end of the banks still going, and trying to get the 9ball started, the final few in the pocket are still playing Thursday.

Was the existing slow rule play ever used or tried before considering a change to the 4 ball idea?

I've probably played in 20 plus DCCs and have never seen a tournament official step in to put an end to a long 1pocket match.

What really is getting ignored is that a lot of the backup of the one pocket matches started from the bank pool matches that were going on way too long. Why is that? Because a good number of bank pool matches that should take no longer than 45 minutes tops were going well over an hour because some felt the need to make a bank & turn it into a damn one pocket type match because they saw no hangers to shoot at,.

True dat.

I agree, it will speed up the game tremendously. So, you need to be able to think fast on your feet. Yeah, anyone can spend all day thinking about the right decision, but in how many sports do you really get all day. In baseball, you get a fraction of a second to "pull the trigger".... I mean, at some point, either "phone a friend" or take the shot for pete's sake :)

I agree -- some players really take advantage and take *way* too long to study a shot.

Just implement the the damn rule changes-Didnt Grady use those in his tournies? The sun still came up the next day! I cant imagine anyone but the Varner wedge-wear-out your-opponent people are upset by the proposed rule changes.

I really don't know how often the Grady Rules were actually used but I think it wasn't very often.

I'm pretty sure he didn't use it in either one of his last two big events, the one up north nor the other down south.

It is no different in one-pocket.

You have "offensive" players and "defensive" players and I've seen one game go for 5 hours, with an hour so so lapse in the middle where not a single ball was made.

If people are "determined" to win, no matter what, then they aren't going to just speed up because people want them to. There has to be some sort of rules and enforcement, or either extend the length of the tournament to make up for it.

It is not about that, bank pool matches should not take as long as they have been which causes the backlog that spills into the one pocket matches. This is how they fall behind every year.

My personal opinion on this is that there are truckloads of guys who just get into the banks to get the event pass.

Many cannot spell banks but they get to say they played and they get their pass. You can see some evidence of this by the number of guys that do not buy back in after their first round bank loss.

Race to 3 means 5 games at most 4hrs would allow 48 minutes per game So after 4 hrs who ever is ahead wins end of match.

Or maybe after say 3 1/2 hr time limit then start spotting the balls to speed things up

I've been to a lot of DCC's and I can tell you two top rated bankers who are on the last ball or 2 will take much longer than any other match.

You have to be almost 100% to make that ball in order to shoot it.
Especially with kicks.

This allows the player who wins the first game or takes a 2-1 lead to just stall like mad until 4 hours is up.

That's a bad strategy for the last ball for two equal players. If you are in a long safety battle with an equal player, and you have a 55% shot, you are supposed to shoot it. If you play safe and leave your opponent a 60% shot, you have much the worst of it. And you for sure have to play the shot if it's at pocket speed and you can leave long.

i like the 1 minute shot clock, with one or possibly 2 extensions pr game

puts an end to a lot of posturing etc
pick a shot and shoot

chess clock would also work

does each game have a referee?

It's clear you have never been to DCC. The only ref is on the Accu-stats TV table and he is provided by Pat. There is no spare staff to run shot clocks, especially if there are five slow tables.
