I bought a cue, should be here tomorrow, a Pure X HXT15 skinny 11.75. I've never owned a decent cue. It has the tip that comes with that shaft, whatever that is. What to do? I have a plastic gizmo that has each end rounded out and it is rough inside, like sandpaper, one coarser than the other. Just kind of shape it up with that or what should I do?

No need to mess with it. When I get a new cue or tip I almost never do anything to it for years. When you miscue or hit a bad shot 99% of the time its a stroke problem not a tip problem.
Google mushroomed cue tip images. If after a few weeks it looks like that have a tip installer put it on the lathe and fix it, they will usually do it for cheap.
Less is definitely more when it comes to shaping or messing with the tip.

from the sound of the post you should find a pool hall with some good players and find someone to teach you the game as the first step. They can explain how to deal with tip and shaft care. Including how to chalk so your ferrule does not look like you stuck it up the butt of a Smurf.
Nice pick for a cue, I like those shafts. if that is your first "real" cue, you will need to do quite a bit of practice to make balls with spin with the LD shaft.

I've been playing pool off and on casually for decades. Just never more than casual. In a bar, always favored a smaller diameter cue. I can hold my own in a bar game but a good player would beat me. Just a decent player. I've been a good athlete all my life, excelled at football quarterback, basketball, golf, pretty much any skill sport. I guess I got pretty good hands and coordination, lol, but my fingers are not long fingers. I dunno, I got the cue this morning, you're right, it is small but i played a few games with it this morning and like it so far. I know it is low deflection, been reading on that.

OR...he could spend a few bucks and a little time with disciplined practice by first getting a video analysis of his stroke, from a qualified professional instructor...which will pay tons more dividends than learning "shots" from other poolplayers!

Maybe a glove would help tighten the grip on the thin shaft. I've never used a glove myself.
