Watching mr. 400 trying to break the record

I went back and rewatched. He haphazardly spotted both balls. I do not know how that would affect the run.
He has been routinely starting from spotted balls if he misses the first or second shot in the rack.
Never said there is anything wrong with spotting balls. Just the way he spotted. Was careless. He didn't freeze the second ball or even make sure it was in line with the one he put on head spot from my perspective. he had to break them up anyway but just curious on how that would be viewed from an official run standpoint.
There doesn't seem to be an "official run standpoint". There is currently no committee in charge of pool records that I know of. The BCA used to do it, but there hasn't been a records committee for maybe 10 years.
In any case, the count is 464 with the first rack included. John made 464 consecutive shots at 14.1. On this run it seems there was no touched object ball or ball resetting problem.
Yes, I rewatched it and confirmed what I remembered. And it was surprising that the person scoring on the stream screen also got the score wrong (assuming John wanted to count the first 14 balls and just fouled on his coin handling:smile
.I watched it again and he even moved the 15 ball when spotting the second ball. I am a fan of his and 464 sounds great. Just wondering what straight pool rules say for that.
No harm. There is no official high run start point. Some people start by throwing fifteen balls out. Others start with a 14 and 1 bih break shot. Others are starting in the middle a broken rack in the middle of a game.

Taking nothing away from Schmidt- he is an outstanding player. Outrageous he can run that many balls- but I think the guys that could run the highest number are the straightest shooters. I think earl in his prime could have run a lot more than his personal best of 408 if he decided to focus on 14.1 instead of 9 ball.
Currently, I think Dennis Orcullo could run a huge number if he decided to focus on 14.1 extensively. He shoots as straight as any player I’ve ever seen

Quite possible but the patience to stand at a table for hours every day trying to break a record and the concentration it takes - straight shooter is only part of the equation. In a thread on the 14.1 forum they said John had already been at the table for 4 hours when the 464 began. He had been at the table nearly 7 hours playing 14.1 when the run ended.
Great point that many will miss. This game as others so often say is very much affected by the mental game. It takes some amazing level of mental fortitude to not a miss a beat after a miss at 150+ and just start again. It's almost like professional pool player OCD.
So as much as people harp on this idea that John is taking multiple shots at an end target rather than it just happening, the question for me is about who else is even willing to do this? It's a feat all on its own to commit to and announce three solid weeks of nothing but hours and hours of straight pool for the end goal.

Exactly!!! My hat off to John Schmidt. He invested two months of his life into this attempt. So far, other than cheap talk I don't see anyone else stepping up. If anyone feels strongly about other professionals, then either stake-horse or create a gofundme page to make worth their while.

So I got Diamond to let me have the use of a couple of tables, added a little money myself and the first year of the DCC Straight Pool Challenge was off and running.
Earl never entered the event. In many ways, I find Earl useless.
As for Orcullo, I think that if he was shooting side by side with John, he would run 527 first. In the final years of the DCC straight pool, he was expected to run 200 or more. When the event first started, I thought that no one would ever run 200 on those Diamond tables.
There are also a lot of holes in the darts boards, but those are much smaller holes.
But they also have a big pool table with no holes. A guy was rolling three balls around on it. I guess that's where you practice your safeties or something.
