how are ya'll doing in league ?

My 8 ball and 9 ball teams both one their APA playoffs last week. Felt good too. My 8 ball match was a challenge to. I go up first and I am playing another 5 in a ever race. Thanks to a 8 on the snap and some bad tables. He gets me down 3-0 in a race to 4. I finally win a game. Then another and then I get a 8 on the snap to put us hill hill. I played great pool the last rack. 2 safeties and I won.

I do stink at 8 ball, but was happy to pull out a win.

My 9 ball match wasn't even close. I played a 5 and beat him 18-2. I played about as well as I could. If I hadn't have scratched on my last break. I would have had him 20-0. Hope I can keep my level of play up.
 
Well been a while since I updated in this thread. Since we won tri-cups following last session, this session has been very average. I coach high school softball, so I have only gotten to play 8 times this session, But I have won 7 of them against some pretty good shooters.

This is now my 4th session of APA, and I finally moved up to a SL5 after toiling as a SL4 ever since I joined APA last year. I am shooting pretty well and 4 of my 7 wins were against SL-6's. Hope everything comes together for cities...
 
Just joined my first league and had my first match this past Sunday. I really enjoyed it and everyone was very nice and welcoming of the new to league and new to pool guy.

Looking forward to the next weeks and hopefully improving my abilities and learning the nuances of the games.

They play 8ball, 9ball and 10ball in the singles league with handicap for each game.

Won my first match in 10ball. Pretty sure the guy let me win though. HAHA.

After that we played some for fun games of 8ball for practice and basically shot once per rack if I was lucky. So yeah. He let the new guy win. LOL

Patience, time, and practice and you'll be the one letting some newbie win someday.

I’m doing aiiight...but there are only 4 teams in my division lol...so one team is kind of weak with only 1 decent six and our other 6 usually plays him so I’m off, and the 2 other teams have a good six and a decent seven...so I play those same 2 basically all the time. In a way it’s cool because they are both good and it’s always a tough match. I’ve won 7 out of 10 this session (one was a random loss against a 3 lol)

Not sure how much longer I’ll do the league thing but it lets me get in some singles tournaments that I like.
 
I showed up last night for pictures only and they talked me into playing because the other team had 6. I got off to a great start, won the lag, was 2-0 and he came back to 2-2, then 3-2 me, then I got jacked up on a long shot and missed - 3-3 and he needs 4. I played a few safes and won the next game - hill-hill. I broke and didn't make anything he ran them down and got hooked on his last ball and I finished it...:thumbup:

He should've had it. The ball he got hooked on was kind of buried but when he shot the ball before that he was perfect on the ball that was semi-buried, could've just put it in the corner, low-left off the long rail back to middle of table to shoot last OB in opposite corner which would have left him straight on the 8. As soon as he missed we sat there and chatted about it before my balls were disturbed so I could show him where he went wrong. People like him are the reason I play in league. He's a good shot and is willing to sit and chat about the game.

All three of my teams are in the playoffs. BCA 8B is tonight. APA 9B and 8B will be next week.

Not sure about MVP status, last time I looked I was .14% out of first in APA 9B but I haven't played the last 2 weeks. And I was .2% out of first in APA 8B but did play last night and won. None of the records have been entered for this week so time will tell. Doesn't matter, I'm going to recommend two other people for team MVP's anyways.
 
Lmao, I just looked up my stats.

Personal stats:
APA 8B MVP - 2nd place
APA 9B MVP - 2nd place
BCA 8B Session - 2nd place

Teams:
APA 9B - 2nd place
APA 8B - 2nd place
BCA 8B - 6th place (but in playoffs)


At least I'm consistent but I feel a bit like Ben Stiller in Meet the Fockers, I deserve some participation trophies!

It's a good time. It's my first sanctioned league experience, played in a city league for years back in Omaha. Joined APA and BCA for the bigger tournaments (Vegas and Lincoln City), once I hit both of those I'll decide what direction I want to go for the long haul but I like both leagues for different reasons.

Have fun. Meet people. Play pool.

That's their motto :)
 
I had an off night last night. Lost 8 ball 5- 2 in a 5-4 race . Played the same guy in 9 ball and lost 46-42 in a 46-46 race.

I have not played in a scotch doubles tournament in a few years but I decided what the heck....a bad day at pool beats a good day sitting at home.

So I partnered up with my weak 3 that I have complained about quite a few times on here . It was a jack and Jill Vegas qualifier.

Handicap limit is 10....i think ? Anyway our total was 8 and we played nobody under a 10. All our races were us going to 3 and them 4. There were a couple teams that were less than 10 like us but we never faced any of them.

I had no expectations of us doing great and sure enough we lost our first match 4-1 vs a 6-4 team. After that we win 3 in a row going hill-hill every time and they were all 7-3 teams. Wound up losing our 5 th match hill - hill bs another 7-3 team. I am pleasantly surprised we went that far in it and actually proud of my team mate coming through with several great shots.....for her lol.

Now to rest up after 9 hours at the pool hall and spend around 5 more hours there tomorrow night. That is after a long dang night there last night . Got there at 7:00....left at 11:30. Back there at 9:00 this morning. Old body cant take it like it used to.
 
Lost my first match as an SL9. Played great safes, I had 5 to go he (SL7) had 8 to go (75-55 race - I had to get to 75), after a decent safe he made a good hit and hooked me, I could go on the short side but my OB was right by the corner and I was afraid I'd put it in the drink so I went cross table (short) and missed, he ran out and that was that.

Overall I played a good match and was happy with my safety play. It was one of those matches where one wrong move made the difference.

We lost all of our matches and are out of the playoffs. I'm not even mad, we had 4 new league players on our team and were in 1st for most of the session. I picked players last session that 1) had a good eye 2) were willing to improve and 3) were committed to playing every week. They all had a good time and improved and are competitive, good enough for me.

Yep, slop counts in APA.

Some rules to pay attention to in APA.

  • Scratch on the break it's in the kitchen.
  • Make the 8 on the break it's a win (it's not a win in BCA)
  • No jump cues, you can jump and/or masse' but you must use your shooting stick.
  • Make the 8 on the break and foul it's a loss
  • CB fouls only, nudge the 6 with your hand when shooting the 10, ask the opponent if he/she wants it moved back.
  • Mark the pocket for the 8 ball, use whatever you want. Lots of people use their phone, wallet, chalk holder, etc. The guy last night had some scorpion looking thing that was 10" tall and made out of copper wire, was pretty cool but pretty ridiculous but to each their own.
  • Fouls must be called prior to next shot i.e. you're shooting the 10 in the corner and CB grazes the 3 ball, if it's not called before you're next shot there is no foul.
  • Only your opponent and his/her captain can call the foul.


We won last night so we're going to tri-cups (basically 8B state). We lost our first match and I shot well in my two games of practice and was feeling good so I said "Put me in coach". I proceeded to demolish my opponent 5-0 with a rackless. My safety play was SPOT on. After making a few on the last game I left myself about 1/4" long so I couldn't cut a ball in the corner, I saw the safe, got down to play the safe, and decided f it, I'm up 4 and I'm not losing this match so I caromed the OB off another one of my balls, the original OB went in the corner as expected, the other ball banked into the side (I didn't plan on it going, was hoping it was middle of table) which left a super thin cut on a side pocket shot (CB was on left long rail, OB was about 4" off same rail, cut it in the opposite side, sometimes I can pull them out of my a**), got perfect angle on the next ball to play for a stop shot on the 10 in the side for a straight shot in the corner. Rackless night, 3-0 points, 5-0 match, B&R for the last game, team went on to win the next 2 matches and we didn't even need the 5th. Turned out pretty good. When my opponent was racking the last rack he looks at me and says "this one's mine", I just smiled. After my last ball, and before the 8, he says "Weren't you at our meeting? This one was mine". And I laughed and laughed and drilled the 8 in :grin:

I'm pretty sure that APA has no option to leave a moved ball (like the option in BCA) -- it has to go back to where the players mutually agree.

And that anyone on the other team can call a foul (though, of course, the shooting player has to accept, if no ref).

Does that apply for the double hit as well?

My apologies, you are correct, the rules say it must be returned but that's apparently not enforced in our area. If someone touches a ball when playing me I usually just say leave it, unless it was messing up their ball and I knew a ball wouldn't pass, etc. When I touch a ball I ask and sometimes we put it back and sometimes we don't. Ironically, this is the one foul I didn't research before posting because given some of the people we play I was positive it was an option because I hadn't been told you have to put the back, lol.

The rules state the opponent and/or his/her captain must call the foul. Sure, I can yell out "foul" if my teammates opponent commits a foul but if nobody else says anything the player can just keep on shooting and ignore me. We've got some funny people in our league and I wouldn't doubt it if that has happened. Generally, you call a foul and that's that.

I will add that these rules are from the APA office and each area can/will have their own by-laws, which might differ from the National office.

A double hit is a foul.

Funny story. At our last score keeping clinic double hits came up and the LO was saying that technically pushing through two balls that are locked up isn't a foul but it's a moral foul. I didn't get involved with the conversation because I didn't want to interfere but if I can technically push through them then I'm going to push through them if needed, morally correct or not, rules are rules and they benefit/hinder everyone the same.
