Who Should Be Selected to the 2019 USA Mosconi Cup Team?

Tyler Styer is a very talented young player with loads of potential.

But the notion that he is one of the 5 best in the USA is laughable.

Shane-Skyler-Thorpe-Bergman-Oscar or Cory

Its just a shame that Dechaine just can't get his head together. He's clearly 2nd or 3rd best in the USA when his heads right. Crazy talent.....

Tyler smoked Justin Bergman by 11-5 at the US Open 9-ball last month. Other than Shane, Tyler, by coming 17th, finished as high as any other American in the field.

What you do in the biggest spots defines you in the world of pool. Tyler also performed fairly creditably in the 2018 Mosconi.

It's no mystery, Matchroom are very transparent about the qualifying, if you don't play in enough qualifying tournaments, you can't get enough points to qualify (same for the Europeans, albeit the list of tournaments is different).

Not this year, nor last year. Ruijsink picks, based on whatever criteria he wants to use.

That's correct. Johan can pick which ever players he likes.

The European method is different, though, and is based on Eurotour and WPA Rankings, with two captain picks if memory serves.

For those who didn't notice, this is directly from the Mosconi Cup home page:

March 31, 2019
RUIJSINK RETURNS AS COACH; VAN BOENING & WOODWARD CONFIRMED FOR TEAM USA
Johan Ruijsink will coach Team USA for a third time at this year’s partypoker Mosconi Cup and will have Shane van Boening and Skyler Woodward on his team at Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas this November 25-28.

Ruijsink guided USA to their 12th partypoker Mosconi Cup title and first in nine years when they shocked Team Europe with an 11-9 success at Alexandra Palace, London last December. Woodward collected the MVP award, while it was Van Boening who made the winning 9-ball for a famous victory.

Both players will return to the team in 2019 and will be joined by three further players to be selected by Ruijsink. As in 2018, Coach Ruijsink will run a series of training camps for players under consideration for selection, before choosing his final squad in the autumn.

“I am really happy that Matchroom decided to hire me again for this year’s Mosconi Cup,” said Ruijsink, who will have Jeremy Jones as his Vice Coach for a second time at this year’s Cup.

I'm not knocking the kid.....but he ain't even in the top 10, perhaps 15 Americans.

Not on the final day in his final match. Thorpe, Deuel and Styer all had a chance to clinch the Cup, but they couldn't and left it up to SVB to do so.

Agreed. I only offered that Tyler performed creditably, not superbly, but he was a solid contributor for Team USA and had much to do with the lead they built up. He did, however, have a tough go of it on day four, just as you say.

Do we know when the team will be set? Or what the deadline is for selecting the players?

I think there's something to be said for giving the guys who won the previous year the option to come back...

A different thought would be a mini-tournament among potential candidates, to decide who's on the team... I bet said tournament would catch on fairly quickly as a pre-Mosconi cup tradition...

Interesting question. Generally, the last spot was awarded right after the US Open 9-ball, which was in October until recently.

I like your idea of a qualifying tournament for the last few under consideration. For example, SVB, Billy Thorpe and Skyler Woodward are no brainer picks ..... but a little tourney with, let's say, Corey Deuel, Tyler Styer, Oscar Dominguez, Josh Roberts, and Shawn Wilkie to settle the matter of the last two spots doens't sound like a bad idea.

Well said sir. I’m sure you’d agree that the DCC was a huge jump up for Sky, besting one of the finest fields I’ve seen in years.

And agree, Tyler stepped up when it counts. Plus he seems like a good guy. That can’t hurt in a team context.

Hey, KM, hope you're well. Sad to say I'll have to skip the August Turning Stone event due to a wedding within the family. Perhaps we'll catch up at the Ocean States. Hope you're hitting 'em straight.

i wouldn't say that Billy Thorpe and his 760+- fargo rate is a no brainer, i'd be inclined to put him in the tourney with the other candidates which should also include BERGMAN and DECHAINE, if they would like to participate.

I'll freely admit I didn't give it too much thought. I just whipped up a example of how a qualifying tourney might work and offered some worthy candidates.

Curious (if anyone knows) as to what players have been invited to and what players have been attending the boot camps Rusnik has been holding and will continue to hold over the next 4-5 months? I'm sure that will have some bearing on who is picked to fill those final 3 spots on the team.

SVB, Sky, Billy, Bergman, Corey are almost certainly our best bet. Dechaine is great but doesn't play enough and Tyler can play with anyone but probably not at the same consistency of these five. I also wouldn't be unhappy if we just rolled the same 5 from last year out. No matter what we do the USA side won't ever have the raw talent of the Euros, so relying on good team chemistry might be our best bet to repeat.

I've never even heard of some of these guys.

I noticed Earl isn't even on this list- perhaps too few games and/or his game has dropped off even more in the last year.
