Has your local pool hall (here in the US) opened back up yet?

Not talking about one life.

Clearly the infection models show that from one infection many can spread. So you're not talking about an accident that causes the death of those in a couple of vehicles, you're talking about multiple car pile ups. I think Faucci called the comparison, "ludicrous" for a number of other reasons.

We all have to go out from time to time to get supplies and that's when your disregard for community health violates those of others without their consent. I can stay at home but on the day I have to go out, and you're standing behind me in the grocery store without a mask shedding virus cells, you violate my safety, my family's safety, that of everyone around you, and untold others.

A persons safety is all on them and no one else.

You could get out of line in the above situation and not rely on someone else to do the right thing.

How do you know you are infecting others because you touched something....?

I think it is appropriate to attempt to deal with the pandemic at a State level, at least initially.

The Fed would have a hard time developing a strategy that would effectively deal with both NYC and some small town that has yet to see large exposure%s.

Should the State' efforts be deemed insufficient, you bet the Fed will step in.
And NOBODY is going to like that.

Not looking for a political debate.

We have no clear national strategy.

There shouldn't be a need for groups of U.S. states to form public health coalitions.

It is time for the federal government to work with the states.

It's about collective responsibility.

For too many people their "principles" only extend to their own personal convenience.

What?! how is a "person's safety all on them", in the cas of infectious disease?

Last I read Sweden's death rate is exceeding that of the US and in fact has one of the highest COVID-!9 death rates in the world.

ya, givemesomeodat

As I said to someone else, this was per Fox, and Rush Limbaugh. News is who is reporting it, sometimes the News Media lies. Like they did and got caught about State of NY, and NYC.

Free Will is what people need excercise, or as they say it your own individual choice.

Thank goodness during WW-2, people had guts to go in to battle, not run and hide3, or we could be speaking German, and eating Rice.

Unless you paying my way in life, I make my own lawful choices. BTW I pay my own way.

You are easily swayed.

it is clear by the way you post things contending multiple sides of the same issue are accurate.

WWII has nothing to do with our current situation and bringing it up is a weak attempt to evoke (historical) emotion.

Go get your rifle and shoot the coronavirus. Do it for America!

We are truly operating in a "new normal" at this time and may continue to do so for an extended period of time. I see 2020 as a lost year, hopeful that 2021 brings a vaccine and a return to life as we know it.

The near unanimous conclusion of all the science and medical experts is that any attempt to re-open our country too soon will result in many more people dying. And that includes young as well as old. This is not exclusively a disease of the old as some are trying to categorize it. In California nearly 40% of deaths have been under age 40 and 50% under age 50. Those with pre-existing conditions the most vulnerable; asthmatic, diabetic, obese, etc.

NO ONE can say what is the best or the right thing to do. We just don't know! But erring on the side of caution seems to be the best course of action until we know better how to contain this virus. We are only six weeks into a lockdown scenario and people are getting antsy now, with protests and calls to re-open in their particular state or locale. The Mayor of Las Vegas wants to open the casinos back up tomorrow. I seriously doubt that many people will suddenly decide to fly to Vegas to visit them, but I imagine some will regardless of the threat to their own health.

I think this is a time to be patient with the process, uncomfortable as it is. I don't like having to stay at home every day. My nature is to be out and about doing things, but this is not the time to be running around. The good news is our house has never been so clean and our yard has never looked better. Interestingly, our entire planet is looking healthier in the midst of this people born epidemic. There is a message here. Maybe it really is us humans who are doing so much damage to the environment and polluting our land, our air and our water. Could it be that we are our own worst enemies? :scratchhead:

I see this entire situation as a planetary wake up call! Will we heed it? That is doubtful based on past experience. They will eventually find a vaccine and we will go back to our old ways. That is pretty much a certainty. Yesterday was Earth Day! A relic of a better time. Many Earth Days ago I wrote an editorial that appeared in newspapers across the nation and garnered me many hate calls on the phone. I think I will dig it out and reprint it here.

I can protect myself from known threats.

The problem in this case is that you do not know who is silently spreading the virus. So, to answer your question: you don't know if you're infecting others and that is why we all need to take due precautions.

ah yes, "Give me liberty, or give me death."

Good old Patrick Henry, though in this case you might want to amend that to read: "Give me liberty, and give me death."

So, you would apparently be one of those guys with the big brass ones, no?

So just what are you doing nowadays to keep those bad boys swinging freely in the open air, while the rest of us shelter in place and observe guidance from government authorities and infectious disease experts?

Are you having people over to your house? Going to visit your neighbors? Maybe playing poker once a week with your friends? How about a barbecue for everyone in a backyard? Are you going out without a mask shopping and doing whatever other errands you can?

Maybe you have relatives? Are you seeing them? Perhaps grandkids who give you a big hug when you walk in the door?

If your opponent is sitting down in a chair, there’s at least at six foot separation. Wash your hands every 30 minutes and don’t touch your face. Seems like social distancing to me. If you see or hear someone coughing or sneezing, put your mask on and get out of there.

In Arizona you are an adult under the law at 18 years old, as ddults you are considered to be able to make your own decisions.

At 14 with parent concent you use to be able to get a Tattoo, yes that was Arzona law years ago.

Do some crimes at 13 you could be charge as an adult. If convinced you will serve in a Jr. Prision, at 18 you got to Big House.

It all about choices, no one says anyone has to do anything.

If Pool Rooms open you do not have to go, if you work there, are called to work & refuse, of I was you employeer you would be replace you with a new worker.

If you go down to support the local room, and do not feel safe, go back to were you feel safe.

Please do not say someone could die, people die everyday from accidents, drug overdose, gang violence, where your concern about that?

Earth Day 1990

Editor:

After several hundred years of raping and plundering the Earth, we have just begun to see the error of our ways. The lonely voice of the environmentalist is finally being heard.

Too bad we didn't pay attention to the first environmentalists, the Native American Indians. The Indians knew how to live in harmony with their environment, and they were willing to share the land and all they knew with us. But we had no place for them on our land and in our hearts. We herded them onto small reservations and destroyed their culture. Now we are reaping what we sowed.

I have no sympathy for my fellow "White Men," only shame for the crimes we committed and continue to commit in the name of progress. My Earth Day 1990 recommendation: Return the land to the Indians and put the White Men on the reservations.

The above was first printed in the Los Angeles Times on April 20 and subsequently reprinted in newspapers across the country from the New York Times to Cleveland Plain Dealer, Denver Post and Dallas Herald, nineteen major dailies in all! It was easy to find my phone number back then and my phone rang off the hook for a couple of weeks, mostly angry callers. I told them that I was glad that I shook their tree! :)

There is a report out there of a woman who was sheltered for 3 weeks but an infected person dropped off groceries on her porch. Yup, she got it.

I guess as long as everyone in the hall understands that they and everyone else may be infected and all the homemade facemasks and 6 foot distancing is still no guarantee it won't spread...then have at it. I'll be in my basement playing the ghost for now.

Sent from the future.

No offense but this is some serious NPR shit. Like any of that is ever gonna happen.

Very narrow minded.

The people exposed as a result of others' actions are victims. We don't know who the victims are or who the spreaders are and honestly, does that differentiation even matter?

Accidents: they are the result of accepted risk.
Drug overdose: self inflicted
Gang violence: many efforts to reduce/ eliminate it.

Next.

I.

Huh?
I don't think your preventative approach is gonna yield the success rate a reasonable individual requires.

The "six-foot separation" is bogus. More than one study has shown that 10ft should be considered minimum and CDC recommends TWENTY feet. Poolroom won't be a safe bet for some time. Don't be surprised if a lot of people get sick when bars/clubs/poolrooms re-open.

NPR? You mean like the rest of the posts on this thread! ;)
I just thought it would be fun to throw in something germane from thirty years ago. I think most will get the satire intended in my letter from way back when.

I will be avoiding these places even after they open.

I hear ya. I just keep hearing the " coronavirus is the planet getting even" crap over-n-over. Its a virus that, based on a lot on info, was released on purpose so China could prove their "medical prowess". True? WTF knows. BTW, we'll all start polluting the air again soon enough. Planning a "cheap gas" roadtrip already. ;)
