I played in that tournament finished 4th or 5th. They were using rules that didn't allow anyone to play safe, the match was timed, whoever was ahead at the end of the allotted time won the match.

The fact that they were trying something new is admirable, however, taking the safeties completely out of the game is not wise. I'm not a fan of one foul rules like they play in tournaments, the 2 Foul (Rollout) rules were far superior, even the safeties required more strategic and physical abilities.

I'm sure glad I read your post because I watched the match and couldn't figure out what the heck was going on, lol. Often, Mike Massey just kept whacking them hard for maximum roll trying to crap something in and I thought it sure was odd, lol.
 
Great match. I can now understand why Earl always wants a 10 or 20 second shot clock. The game was much more exciting, though it looks like they missed a few due to rushing, it makes for an exciting match.

It was pretty neat seeing them play when 9 ball was played on slower cloth, you can really get a feel for why older players preach using 2 and 3 rail routes even when less rails will get you there.
