The veneers from bottom to top are, Yellow_Orange_Red_Black
Then Mirrored B R O Y then the main points go back to Y O R B.
This was the first Davis blank I had seen with two "short" splices veneered. I have seen a few with the single short splice beneath the main forearm points but they were not veneered and you are correct they are usually wrapped over.
Sounds like Mr. Carl had two of these specially made the following is a quote from Carl pulled from the sale:
"....Less then a year before John passed away, I called him and asked if he would make me a custom blank. He agreed, but because it was a complicated job, he told me to wait on paying him until it was complete. A month or so later, he called to tell me the blank was finished. But just in case he had a problem making the blank, he made a two. He thought they both came out okay but wanted me to see them first before I paid him. If I liked either or both, mail him a check or send back the blanks. I did not, send back the blanks. It goes without saying, both blanks were awesome. They were works of art. So, needless to say, I sent him the payment for both.
I gave them a couple of light passes on my lathe then set them aside. I completed both cues over time and one was sold a while back. The last remaining cue is now up for sale. This cue was made from one of the last custom blanks made by John Davis. Sadly, there will never be any more.
As you can see, the cue is stunning. It has a highly figured birds eye maple forearm and handle. There are ebony points in the forearm and butt sleeve. With what John called his flame veneers." (Jan Carl)....
