Full Splice Buzz / Rattle

I have a full splice sneaky pete cue from back in the late 70s by Muecci. It has developed a buzz or rattle when hitting any shot that is not center ball. Any left, right, top or bottom english results in a pretty nasty sound along with a vibration through the butt. With the joint pin removed the noise and vibration is still there. Holding the butt in one hand and tapping the butt with a rubber mallet there is a rattle and vibration. I am guess that means the full splice joint has either developed a crack or had a glue failure or both. Also the butt has about a 1/8" warp when rolling it across a flat surface (probably has something to do with the rattle).

Any suggestions on a possible fix or is it just firewood at this point? Not an expensive cue but has a certain amount of sentimental value to me.

How did you get the joint pin out.
 
Have you pulled off the bumper?

Mine (’84) had an epoxied in weight bolt before I removed it. That could be loose, or a bit of epoxy could be rattling around.

Yea just to cover all the bases I'll give your suggestion a try. However with the vibration that comes through the butt when tapping with a mallet I'm pretty sure it's a structural issue. Plus it's at it's worse when you tap right on the splice.
 
I'm surprised anyone would go to this length on an old Moochie SP. Pulled the joint pin???? Sounds like a wt. bolt issue to me.
 
Meucci has been known to add weight bolt sideways of the handle.
Grab a magnet and stud finder to make sure there aren't hidden set screws .

Did not find anything. Also removed the weight bolt and found nothing else in the bore. With the bolt removed leaving nothing but the wooden full splice, the stick still has the same vibration and buzz as before.

I've seen some real nitemares on older full spliced cues. Unless you can do this project yourself because of it's sentimental value. It isn't really worth the cost. There could be a hidden bolt somewhere and it's covered up. Whether from the bottom or from the joint end.

To add to what Mike said, Is this one with the tiny black ring where the points meet. If not I would suggest removing the weight bolt and see what kind of glue or something may be inside the hole. Also clean out the joint pin hole with a quarter inch drill bit until you hit solid wood. Do the same with on the weight bolt end with most likely a 5/16 inch drill. If the hole goes really deep run a little metal rod up until it bottoms out and see if it bumps something hard like lead or metal. If it does that is probably the problem. The hidden thing Mike referred to.

I have owned a Meucci S/P since I bought it new in 1991. I owned 3 Meuccis and the S/P is the one I kept. As Michael says, fixing a rattle and a warp is l8kely to make repair more costly than can be justified. But some of us who own them are pretty loyal and would be willing to put in reasonable efforts to keep them in solid operating condition.
 
a buzz in a cue can be an easy fix... such as the weight bolt... or it can be a night mare..... I made a cue and it had a buzz........... I pull the pin and recored the entire cue butt with a 3/8 wooden dowel................ it still buzzes.................... It is now my wife's break cue.................. go figure

This full splice has no black rings, it's just completely plain to to bottom, looks just like a hose cue from 5 feet away, except for the muecci ferrule. I'll give what you suggest a try, I have been kind of working a process of elimination going from easiest to more difficult fixes and so far have'nt found anything out of the ordinary. Will update when or if I find anything. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment. I'll keep chipping away at it and hope i find what is causing it to rattle but worse case I might have to live with it.
