Big Spot

I play the same guy nearly every day at our rec center where I reside. I like 9 ball so I normally give him the last 2. In a race to 9 he will get 2 or 3,mainly if I hang the 9. I tried something different the other day...he could shoot any ball as long as the 9 was last.I still rolled over him pretty easy. Back to 8 ball where I play mine in the bottom pockets.

Nope, poor Dave has no concept of position play.Playing 8 ball if he gets bih he will always shoot some ball he could make
from anywhere instead of the one that is hardest to get on or a shot to break up a cluster, you know that guy .He hits nearly every ball with high inside english, cue ball spends a lot of time on the end rail.He seems to enjoy playing so I don't give him too much grief since I at least have someone to play. Ironically when we play banks he can make some pretty good shots...ie those that need a ton of inside to go in.

Is he against learning to play better? I know a few people that just refuse any sort of advice or learning.
If you guys play almost every day it's odd that he did not pick up on the fact that you two were playing totally different types of game at the table. I for sure would want to know why if it was me.

In the 90's , I came up with a game I could play anyone with that spot ( shoot the balls in any order making the 9 ball last ). In my area we had a big Filipino contingent. They would bring in the pinoy champions like Efren, Andam, Lining, etc. So I offered to play Andam that game. The locals said yes, then they all went outside. Andam came to me and said 'NO' ! lol. That game is the nutz if you just play fair -to-good !

I used to play someone who was a straight beginner. No plans to get better. We played where I bank everything and didn't play safe. It was a good game. Played once or twice a week like that for a couple years. Fun had by all.

I think I would play anyone 9 or 10b with a handspan.

Am I wrong?

Yes, still interviewing backers!!

I have a friend who is pool-retarded. I have no idea how he remains ignorant to the adherence of billiards to the laws of physics.

We play a game where I play 3 cushion and he plays straight caroms and he can only win when i leave my ball and the red together after missing.

The best spot I have seen was 8 ball and spot was could remove 1 ball at any time. For $50/game. First game spotter had perfect shape on key ball. Spotted steps to table and removes key ball. 8 ball is hidden. After a heated discussion spotter paid $50 for a lesson.🤷

My favorite spot to give up was "call ahead" - I had to call the next ball and pocket (after the one I'm shooting). Sounds easy enough...

Good practice too.

pj <- best for non-rotation games

I saw a city champion lose his money at “call ahead”...lost to a guy even who needed 20 points at snooker.
...much of his game was based on percentage shape.....and now it didn’t work.
i always turned down those games....didn’t want to change my thinking.

I try to play spot shape for high percentage spots.

pj <- and along high percentage routes

One of my usual patterns at snooker was to break the pack from a red ball, like straight pool, and play to land whitey somewhere between the blue spot and the D.....had four colors to have a shot with a good angle.
....don’t want to call ahead when you play like that.

Some guy trapped the Fillers with this at Roy's Basement. Either could have won but I think it wasn't worth the bother.

Good 8 ball spot is weakling can shoot at the 8 early - 3 ball run or whatever or only shoot at the 8 if they need it. Variations abound.

I’ve given some crazy spots over the years. Years ago a kid started coming in with a friend of mine. He’d literally never played before and was fascinated with us running racks. So I started teaching him for $2 a game 9 ball. As he progressed we upped the stakes. At first we played with me breaking every game and he only had to make a good hit to win. Well he eventually got the fundamentals down and started figuring out how to kick. When it got too hard for me to win we changed to him only having to make a ball. That eventually got risky so we moved to the 5 out and he got ball in hand if I missed (unless I called safe). After awhile he didn’t get ball in hand and got the 6 out. Last time I played him he was getting the seven alone. I’ve heard he’s improved a lot since then. I don’t intend to give him weight again if I play him.

When I was shooting pretty fair a spot I gave in barrooms was that I couldn't make anything straight in. Banks, combos, caroms, kicks, just not straight in. I was in Atlanta fixing to catch a bird home. Had to drive to Atlanta early to be sure of not getting stuck in traffic but then with time to kill we headed to a pool room. The guy I was playing was in the army so I offered my usual barroom spot. I had no more than got the words out of my mouth before I realized I had screwed up big time! This was a wee bit better player than the average barroom banger plus we were competitive at everything. A ratty old nine footer close to the counter was the closest table when we got balls so being in a hurry we set up there. No question of anything but my best game after getting stupid on the spot.

With the heat on I was getting out in one, maybe two innings, rarely three or more because I had to massage the eight ball to be able to pocket it. Soon everyone else in the place was on the rail. Wanted to know if I wanted them to call somebody, they wanted to see some action! Told them the truth, I had less than an hour to play before taking a bird out. Also told them everyone played like that where I came from! Some of the best pool I ever played breaking and running about half the time giving that spot even on those old bucket pocket tables. I didn't lose a game.

The game isn't as hard as it sounds when you are playing shape for these shots instead of the other player safing you or you getting yourself in trouble but it ain't easy either.

I've played that way before, with almost beginners, they can make the 8 after sinking any of their balls if they wanted to.

A guy from my hometown (who could REALLY play) was always in action. That's because he gave out insane spots. Spots where everyone would think he's lost his mind. Thing is, he hardly ever booked a loser. I can recall him giving a guy that is easily capable of running 30 or 40 14-2 in one pocket. 14-2. He won the first three racks and the guy quit him.

Lol. Only stipulation is that you can move whitey ANYWHERE between your hand span. Sometimes you can't move whitey your full span. It does come up.
