quick banking question

Generally CB strikes with draw are hit harder (to maintain spin prior to contact), so it may appear that the bank is being shortened up by the draw

word up. I think this is how I fooled myself.

a little off-topic, but is ron still around? he was pretty active on old RSB I've seen, and I've wondered why I haven't seen him post here.

A system will give you a framework and experience will fill out the framework. In the end you have to go by feel. The actual nitty physical details are just covered by the experience.

I love this.
thanks all for the replies.

Ron posts to some of the pool groups on FleeceBunk. He never made the transition to the BD site or here.

As for his kicking system, have stun with side on the cue ball when it reaches the cushion. You need something close to gearing side. The best way for you to learn it is to set up a mirror target and find out how much side you need to get the angle right.

There is no rhyme or reason to aim at the diamond--it's just a random amount of adjustment that's in the direction needed (shorter).
On the tables I frequent (GCs) it's surprisingly accurate - and the amount of "shortening" self-adjusts with shallower and steeper angles.

In the end, you still have to figure out how much adjustment is needed for the table and cloth conditions
For sure. Fortunately, the behind-the-cushion-nose target is adjustable. For example, on a shorter-banking Diamond you might aim halfway from the cushion nose to the diamond rather than at the diamond itself.

I pulled this out of context but it sums up nicely why I don't bother attempting to reach a high level of proficiency with banking.

Until the day comes (which it never will) that I play on consistent equipment, the finer aspects of banking will never be more than guess work. In the locations I play, I'm lucky to have all the rails on a given table wrapped correctly. Odds are some will be dead in areas and the cloth will be considerbly older than the playing surface.

True enough. Besides, you are a very good shot maker, and good shot makers seldom bank a ball that is able to be cut.

However, learning to bank really well is no different than learning to aim cut shots really well. It's a simple matter of programming the mind to recognize certain shots, certain references that (with enough experience) allows the subconscious to match/associate or fine tune your acquired knowledge with what you're currently seeing.

Adjusting banks for weird table conditions then becomes fairly easy. But it requires conscious effort, or else you'll step up to a shot that your mind recognizes as a dead bank, only to miss it short or long because you didn't consciously make the adjustments needed to account for the weird or different table conditions.
