World Pool Masters (22-25 May2021) Winner $25K

Wow, If all of today's matches are as exciting as Grabe vs Filler, we're in for a treat. Filler had to negotiate a tricky shot at 4-4 in which he'd pocket the seven and, going two rails, break up the clustered eight nine. He just barely missed the cluster and left himself with a safety that would have even challenged Efren Reyes, the greatest defensive player nine ball has ever known. He wasn't up to the task, and Grabe gained a 5-4 lead. Grabe had a good look at a runout to reach 6-4, but made an error on the six, hooking himself on the seven, enabling Filler to tie it at 5-5. Filler then broke in three balls but still had to play safe. He delivered an absolute beauty and Grabe was not able to make a good hit, so Filler ran out with ball in hand for a 6-5 lead. One Filler break and run later, Josh was the 7-5 winner of the match. Josh was definitely tested to the max by his in-form opponent who didn't falter until the very late stages of the match.

I still don't feel that this is Filler firing on all cylinders, and get the sense he's vulnerable. Of course, as we know, he can inflict some harm with his "B" game and perhaps he'll continue to do so.

I know this isn't an easy question, but does anyone know if a player has ever won the World Cup of Pool and the World Pool Masters in the same year? Filler (who also played on a winning Mosconi Cup team in December) is two matches away from pulling it off. His task won't be easy, but then again he is Josh Filler.

If Filler takes this down, he will be so close to having a full trophy case at the age of 23.

China Open
Mosconi Cup (2x) + MVP
World 9-Ball
U.S. Open
World Cup of Pool
World Pool Masters (assuming he takes it down today)

And then he has second-place finishes in the World 10-Ball and DCC 9-Ball. Even without those two, he would have a full Matchroom trophy case.

that's insane.

yes, the world 10-ball, the international 9-ball and maybe the japan open remains. but still, it's crazy to achieve what he has considering his age and the skill level of his contemporaries.

Yup, quite a resume. He's already in the conversation for greatest ever nine ball player with names like Lassiter, Souquet, Strickland and SVB. He has a chance to be remembered as the greatest nine ball player ever, but he's most definitely not there yet. If he wins a few more major titles, it will be hard to put him anywhere but at the top, but that's much easier said than done. We shall see. Wish him luck in his continuing pursuit of greatness.

My hunch is that Josh won't win this week. I just don't think he's even close to playing his best, but you never know. To me, SVB, who apppears to be in fantastic form, is the one to beat right now.

I think his upcoming match with SVB will be critical. If he gets by him and makes it to the finals, he'll catch his usual gear and win it. Will be interesting to see if there's a psychological element at play vs SVB, though. As you said, SVB is playing great and Filler is on his B-game. Does the former play down and the latter up? Filler has a huge advantage in previous head-to-heads with Shane. And both guys will be playing their semi-final match knowing that they will likely be big favorites to win it all if they can advance.

SVB definitely looks very motivated right here right now ... seems like he wants to make a statement at this Matchroom event after... and the way he plays here his chances against Filler look really good.
Looking forward to the evening session.

Very well said. Yes, Filler has usually owned Shane, but I feel Shane will be very hard to beat. I don't think he'll come off the fine form he has been showing. I feel that Josh will have to raise his game and match Shane's excellence if he wants to advance to the final.

The wildcard is that both are coming off layoffs. SVB chose to skip the Predator CLP event and Josh missed it because he got COVID, so both are a bit raw competitively.

Shane is playing well but I'm not convinced yet that he is playing great. Sure he has hit some balls at speed into 4 inch pockets from a distance and they have barely wiped their feet, but he is yet to be tested. I hope the semi against Filler brings the best out of both of them and we get a classic.

-Shane says he has only beaten Filler once in 10 meetings. That is huge 90% head to head. I know Filler has better head to head but tot it would be lower like 60% to 70%
-Albin says Austrian govt subsidise 60 to 80% of their expenses. Wow. No wonder Christoph is always smiling

He hasn't been tested because he's played so well. He had the misfortune of drawing the World 9-ball Champion in the round of 16, a player who has been beating everybody of late, and he beat him to a pulp.

Like you, I'd love to see Shane and Filler in stroke together in the semi. That would be something special.

Yes, Filler has not only dominated Shane, winning nearly all their head-to-head matches, but most of those matches haven't been close. To my knowledge, their last three meetings in nine ball were these:

2019 Mosconi Cup
Filler 5 SVB 1
Filler 5 SVB 0

2020 Derby City Classic
Filler 9 SVB 2

In other words, Filler has won 19 of the last 22 racks they've played against each other.

I just think that today it will be Shane's turn.

Sky just dogged a bad 9 ball. It's interesting how ALL types of mechanics can break down under pressure. Sky with his fast, short, punchy stroke. Niels with his super mechanical pause. Melling with his silky smooth backstroke and pure delivery. SVB with his hitch. Even guys like Tyler Styer, who seems to possess the most textbook of fundamentals, can dog it under pressure.

I guess at the pro level, it doesn't really matter how you deliver the cue, and dogging it instead becomes about the voice in your head simply being too much to overcome in the moment.

Do you know off the top of your head when Shane has actually beaten Filler in a tournament?

Nice post. Everybody dogs it from time to time, but the elite do it less. Pressure affects everyone, regardless of their pedigree.

Just after he won the Masters one year, a journalist asked Jack Nickalus whether he had been able to block out the pressure as he came down the stretch. Nicklaus' classic reply was "if you don't feel the pressure, it means you're already dead." Jack's view was that as blocking out the pressure was impossible, embracing it was the best course of action.

Anyone who tells you that the elite pros never jump up on their shot is mistaken. Similarly, anyone who tells you that the elite pros always stick to their preshot routine is similarly mistaken. The best players manage to minimize these occurrences, but pressure can contribute to such infractions.

The elites in any sport turn the pressure into a higher level of concentration and focus.
