Ferrules

Serious question and hoping for some answers.

I have been playing on ivory ferrules for 40 years. I love the way they play and sound. However I am just tired of replacing them when they crack. Seems like today’s Ivory is not as strong as it once was. I could be wrong. What is the best overall ferrule rouse knowing I prefer Ivory?

Does anyone know what material Andy Gilbert uses? I like these also. They don’t shine up nearly as nice but they hit very well.

I've had an ivory ferrule on the cue I use daily for 15 years and have never had one crack, are you breaking with it? Maybe you should just get a break cue.

If your ivory ferrules are cracking there is a problem with your tip installation.

I have played with ivory ferrules for decades. I used to live in Montana, pull my Gina with ivory ferrules out of the trunk of my car in -40 degree weather -- and play with them without issue. You do need to always use a fiber pad when installing and you can't be grinding the ferrule with rough sandpaper -- the top needs to be pretty smooth or you are inviting a crack..

I own a BKRUSH. My break cue obviously. I literally have had about 5 IVORY ferrules break in the past 3 years at almost $100 a pop once installed. They are generally installed by Joey Batista. I trust his work.

Never use a pad. It changes things. But have been getting them capped.

I have a couple lengths of Tomahawk material.
9.5" x 3/4" round and 2.5" x 3/4" round.

$15 for both pieces including US shipping.

Tomahawk isn’t going to give you the feel you’re wanting IMO.

Some LBM ( linen based melamine) ferrules would be closer. The Aegis ferrules or the old LBM from David Warther are better options in my opinion. I have some Super Tusk from Atlas that I’m getting ready to install that I’m kinda excited to test. The ivory like stuff from Warther ( Guitar Parts & More) doesn’t hit as crisp as Aegis in my opinion.

Thinslice, are you saying you had a Revo break shaft modded by adding an ivory ferrule? Don't get me wrong if that is what gets you the best results,so be it but I get your point that it sucks that it won't hold up.

That's kinda why I asked in fact, how many setups did you go thru to get to that conclusion? I still prefer ivory on my Schon because it sings, but have been playing real well with a shaft I made to fit my Schon from a broken house cue, with a Mason Micarta ferrule/Ultraskin M on it.

Admittedly,I have limited experience with a BK Rush ,with maybe 15 breaks spread out over 3 diff versions,a Sport Wrap,a wrapless both with stock tips, and a Sport Wrap butt with a Cuetec shaft/White Diamond combo. I would have thought the stock BK setup would be more durable than an ivory ferrule, not to mention the warranty issue possibility if things go downhill.

They feel great, and work well but,I like linen and the Rush isn't available like that yet,so no bueno there, unless I bought just the shaft to go on my current break cue butt, which is an ebony STL-1 Schon. I don't like that idea either unless it was bonus money from a score or something so I'm planning on buying a pre-filled blank and making one myself.

LBM,Mason,Ivorine 3/4,and word is Tomahawk are all more durable and plentiful options. Tommy D.

Does your ivory ferrule have a pad on it between it and the tip? If not just put ivory back on it with the protector pad on it.

Hello Tommy,

No I never said I replaced the BK Rush with an Ivory Ferrule. I would have to say that would be a idiot move. I was asked if I break with my playing cue that has ivory and I merely pointed out that I own a BK Rush and that’s my break cue.

I really don’t know why my ferrules keep breaking and therefore I am looking for an alternative.

Nothing worse than breaking in a tip and falling in love with the hit and then having the ferrule crack.

Tiger's Saber-T is close to ivory. Heavy and and hits close to it .
Tomahawk is on the light and low deflection side. Opposite of ivory.

Joey at some point I will get with you and talk about my options. As a traditional player I am not one for low deflection or any of today’s ideas. I just like the hit of Ivory and the sound and feedback one gets. Not to mention the fact that it shines up so nicely. Just tired of replacing the ivory.
