Think people choices are like personal preferences.

Alot of people get Ernie Martinez out of Colorado, and Ernie Gutierrez of Ginacue confused! Not saying that's what's going on, but I've seen it happen.
Ernie Martinez does make good cues though, his cues favor some of McWorter cues, in terms of design.
So, the person who mentioned Martinez was either talking about Ernie Martinez from Colorado or Ernie from Ginacue. Few people who mentioned Ernie Gutierrez as a top 5, have actually owned one of his cues due to their retail price (myself included). But I have played with one, a cue dealer/collector who used to stake me, had one he got in a trade, that let me play some sets with it, when I was cueless. They are everything the fuss is about, I promise you that! I was nervous playing with a 5 thousand dollar cue though!
