Black-Balled’s 2nd Visit to Family Billiards, Boone, NC

Walter contacted me a few days ago and said he’d be passing through this area on his way from his residence in the Washington DC suburbs to Brevard, NC. The detour here only amounted to maybe an hour out of his way. He showed up yesterday (Friday July 2) right on time at 4:30.

I assumed he’d want to play again on our 10 foot tight pocket pool table (it hardly slowed him down last time, at his skill level) but he surprised me when said he’d really rather play on a 9-footer with more normal size pockets.

Just to clarify, we do not play for anything other than our pride. He might very well oblige if I ask, but I’m smart enough not to. We commenced to playing a race to 7, 9-ball. It was quickly clear to me that Walter had not been playing much pool lately, hence the reason he wanted to play on an easier table. Perhaps he’s been putting in too many miles on his bike.

Taking advantage of a number of Walter’s uncharacteristic mistakes, I jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Apparently I lacked the killer instinct as I had a number of chances to finish him off, but managed to find a way to screw up easy runouts for 3 consecutive racks. In the hill-hill game, Walter had a nice 6 or 7 ball runout, electing not to be nice and give his host another trip to the table.

Next thing I knew Walter was unscrewing his cue. I had assumed we’d be playing multiple sets but apparently this was it! No forewarning at all that he only had time to play one set and he’d be on his way to Brevard. Would that have been the case if I’d won the set?

This was a valuable lesson for me - first, clarify up front how long / how many sets you’ll be playing, and second, be ready to bring it right out of the gate, as you never know when your opponent is going to pull up and call it quits. Even when no $ is on the line, I still like to have some idea idea as to the parameters of the session.

Walter, just kidding, but in all seriousness I enjoyed your brief visit and appreciate your efforts to drive out of your way to make it here again. I’ll be ready for you next time!

Sounds like a great time between two fantastic players. I will try and swing in to your room to play some when I get back there next. You, your place and Black-Balled are three things on my list of things to get to see.

Glad you guys were able to play again. The next time I’m in NC I’m going to have to check your place out. If I have to run early don’t charge me with breach of contract though. lol

I feel like I belong to a select group.
I’ve played in that room and had a couple great meals.

Sadly / luckily it is our grill that keeps us open, more so now than ever in our 25 years of existence. Yesterday was a typical day for our non-alcoholic pool room and grill.

It was a good day. Roughly 5% sales in pool time, 45% in eat-in diners and 50% in take-out food orders, remember 0% in alcohol sales. That may have been a little extreme, but pool time is certainly no more than 10% of our average revenue in recent years.

If we can’t keep our grill open due to a shortage of qualified cooks, we are dead in the water in less than 2 weeks - very scary.

It was a good day, roughly $2.5k in sales. About $125 of that (5%) was in pool time, $1,100 in eat-in diners and $1,300 in take-out food orders.

I’ll have to figure out if I come to your place for some food and 1P action on your 10’er when I’m in Charlotte for the Saints game or just donate at West end or the other place

You won’t find any 1P action here unless I make a phone call, but I’m up for any game other than 1P or banks.

I’m 30 min from there bud just let me know I’ll come down off the mountain….

Sorry to eat and run, Chris. I think you know I love your room...so nice.

It is correct I have not been playing much pool at all. I also had a horrid food day prior to our set and I was all weak as shaky from lack of food prior to arrival.

The meal I had was awesome. Ready to have 2 more right now.

I made it to Brevard. I am here now and waiting for my hosts to wake up and ride around Pisgah today. Pic from my window...

Cool pic. Us flat landers don’t see much of that type of scenery.

Chris- why no alcohol? Dry county or personal choice?

Nice.
I haven’t been to Pisgah but I rode at Tsali three times.

Sounds like the Pool is not a draw, maybe it is a good joint with Pool tables.

We had place like that in Phx, Uncle Charlie’s, sadly it shut its doors.

Go ahead and make me feel even worse that I couldn’t beat you even when you were in such rough shape - LOL!

I’m in Boone . Just stay busy fishing but have been to your place for lunch a ton of times . Didn’t know you have a tight 10 footer so I’ll start coming in more often now. What nights are tournaments on ? Thanks and see y’all 🔜
I find it hard to believe you live within 10 miles, call yourself a pool player, and don’t even know about our Monday night 9-ball tournaments.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself here by 7 PM on Monday nights, for one of the best weekly handicapped 9-ball tournaments in western NC. However, no tournament tomorrow night - too many tourists up here this week.

Yes, it is a dry county and we are not within any city / town limits that has voted to allow alcohol sales. It does eliminate a lot of problems and makes us a very unique and desirable place for many of our regulars, although the alcohol $ sales would be nice to have.
