Griff's in Las Vegas

Jon Taffer saves bars that are on the verge of shutting down on his reality show Bar Rescue. So far, he has rescued 188 bars across the United States. While 94 of them have remained afloat, 84 have shut their doors.Dec 24, 2020
The great majority of his rescued bars were done before the recent Covid-19 pandemic. I think the pandemic related closings skew the percentages of his successes. That said, his show has caused me to mostly eat at home unless I am VERY familiar with the establishment.

I know a guy that at a bar if it doesn't have a cap on it he doesn't drink it.

Well Mark Griffith use to post here, surprised he has not come to post.

I am sure Monday Bar Rescue will be active topic.🤣

A few comments:

The fail rate in the restaurant bar industry is very high. 50% plus maybe? Some of the things you see on that show are why: Theft, bad management, uncaring sloppy employees, drunk employees, drunk owners, lack of real capital when opening, increasing food, liquor and operating costs + taxes. Covid made all of it worse.

Yes, these shows are scripted...otherwise it would be impossible to make a decent narrative or for it to fit into a reasonable time frame.

There are things service industry people and owners can learn from this particular show, Bar Rescue if they pay attention when they watch it. If the struggling owners featured are willing to take the help it can be a net positive...but it is up to them afterwards.

These shows are entertainment and can be a fun watch.

Is it possible Gary Lutman is helping hype up the show in advance by airing his complaints before the show airs? Only those closer to the situation know the truth here. There is a contract as part of these shows that requires you to be limited in what you can say until a show like this airs.

But not if you were fired and NO longer work for the bar. He's scrambling to put it out there before folks see what a boob he was on the show (if that's the case but it appears by all indications it is)

I seriously doubt Mark is gonna fire an competent bar manager. So, somethings were probably found out about his management style and it appears it was not too good.

The fired manager's rant didn't really address his competency but he said Mark was disloyal for not keeping him around forever as promised. Not really sure how many bar managers get lifetime contracts or other big perks to be protected at all costs ?? Hell, union folks don't even get that ;)

Many of the problems are from owners who do not run business, or hire help & under pay them. You can not expect maximum effort for minimum wage.

We had one bar in Phx 5 -6 bar boxes, tournaments, leagues, owner dad drank too much, gave friend free drinks.

Place was dirty, nasty, bar was not anything like clean.

Place shut down, because of problems.

I think the other reason why bars and restaurants close is that the owners are not business people. Just because you can make a great hamburger doesn't mean you can run a hamburger joint.

Well people think it would be fun to own a,———.

Successful people put in long hours, or loose investment.

Covid hoax was like injection of death to small business.

True but not in this case. Mark G. has been in the pool/billiard business for most of his life. What happened here was mostly covid related. They were doing good prior to shut-down. Gary is a pool player/gambler. He also has run/owned rooms in the St.Louis area. Things like this happen in any business.

Well the exposure from Bar Rescue will drive people to Griff’s, if they have positive experience. Should help the business.

IMHO Bar Rescue can only crest opportunity.

Last week It was VFW Post in Pahrump, NV.

Barbecue looked to die for.

My comment was not necessarily aimed at Griffs specifically. More of an in general comment.

Griff's was going to do a pretty major upgrade/overhaul after covid anyway. Seriously doubt that Mark needed Taffer's help to survive. Just more pseudo-reality t.v. bullshit.
Somehow Gary ended up a casualty. There must be more to the story.

Most of the things Taffer goes in and corrects are kinda obvious, but the owners either can't afford it or are actually oblivious to it.

Like the cleanup items, pests, cross contamination of food, serving spoiled food... those things are not great mysteries... you need to know them just to get through life, let alone owning and operating a business.

Marketing, rebranding, overhauls and facelifts, that's another thing...

A lot of the times in the past shows, the place gets a new name... is this now no longer Griff's?

I think the fat checkbook in Taffer's pocket is a big reason for the success he has. Another thing I noticed is that most of the bar owners have no experience in either the bar or restaurant business. And they all seem to open undercapitalized.

Couple of yea

pretty sure I spoke with you when at Griff’s a couple of years back. I also spoke with Mark mainly about John Duclose a mutual friend. Also had some interaction with the manager. Given our combined experience in management and hospitality, my wife and I were unimpressed with the manager. After only one interaction. It is my opinion that Griff’s can do better and the manager is better suited for another occupation.
