Best Pool Balls?

Let's say for example your table is on a concrete slab with no carpet. Do you want to take a chance of a $400 set of balls bouncing off that concrete floor? They do get accidentally dropped . They do occasionally jump off the table . They're not going to stay very nice for long.

I played four years with the aramith crown standards. When I bought them they were 55 bucks. They are now one hundred bucks a set. But they are very good ball.

When I do get another set, I'm going to look hard into the Dynasphere balls. Been hearing some very good things about them.

I see what you are saying but, I would have to disagree in a positive way. I took a break from pool for 2 decades. When I left Efren was winning everything and the biggest money pool had ever had was at the pinnacle.

When I returned ( an entirely different story) som much had changed. Revo, many, low deflection shafts and diamond becomes the table. I was like wow. Also new balls are on the market. Not mention pocket angles and pocket size had changed. Entirely different game. It’s still pool but it’s a different game.

I got my table and had to make a choice on balls. I took the safe route and got centennials. Again when I left the sport, only pool halls had centennials. If you were lucky to have a table you got whatever they provided with the table. I personally was never impressed with centennials. I didn’t get the great attraction. That was after about 6 months of sold play. The get scuff marks, they attract dirt and grime. As far as looks, I have soft spot in my heart for the game so I guess they look ok? The cue ball would take burn marks off the cue. Especially during miscues. It actually takes a little time with polish and a rag to get those off. My diamond ball polisher won’t remove them. Then the measle ball. Same damn thing. Then the red circle. Ahah! I found my favorite cue ball. Then the predators came out. I liked the looks of the balls but was skeptical. So I ordered the cue ball. I played it and it played great. It stayed clean and I happen to like the black triangles because you get the same effect of the red measel without the overwhelming red circles and distraction. Big, big pluses! I received the rest of the ball set for my birthday. I was very happy. They play just like you would expect the balls to play without the grime and the clinging to the other balls. You can draw again because it’s predictable.

I know there have been tests in the past on ball sets but, I would like to see a current one with the Arcos in the lineup and see how they measure up. Highly surprised if they are not at the top.

They are that good! I give credit where credit is due. I hear lots of great things about the tungstens also. Haven’t hit those. But, I can’t image they would measure up but, love to see how they all measure up in real tests.

I haven't played with some of the sets mentioned in this thread so I've no useful input on brand. But they all wear, and not just because they hit the floor and get dinged.
The 1 ball seems to get the most wear in rotation games because it's the head ball. You can measure the diameter with a 2-3" micrometer and weigh it with an accurate digital scale. They get smaller and weigh less - admittedly slightly. The cue ball wears more than all of them. I think other than obvious damage, diameter is the indicator for when it's time to replace a set of pool balls.

And this is why I never use the 1 ball first when playing 8 ball, and recommend others to follow that rule as well. Although not long ago I heard someone say the 8 ball rack was bad because the 1 was no in the front, so people may not even know they can use any ball there.

I use higher # balls for head ball in 9 or 10b, in lieu of 1b.

I often play full rack rotation and do not bother rearranging balls once they're in the rack.

Yet still, my one ball hangs lower than the other.
 
I have a set of cyclop ares and they play just fine to me. If I had to recommend a set, I would recommend aramith tournament. I would like to get a set of them for myself in the future.
 
If centennials are the choice then you must admit you are playing with an inferior product. Plain and simple. Stuck in the Stone Age. I get it. I was once there.

Yes definitely stuck in the stone age shooting on Gold Crown 2. At least I am shooting on Simonis 860HR. Yes I am still using my 1973 Viking pool cue .

In all my travels around the country the Centenial balls are the most miss matched balls I’ve ever seen. For some reason the 2 and 4 balls end up being the most undersized balls. I love their design but they don’t wear well or come from the factory bad or both

To my untrained eye, I would have guessed GC 1. I thought the GC 2 had bronze feet and ball box trim.

Our pool table installer was checking it earlier this week and told me that it is a Gold Crown 2. He installed the rails and fabric mid January of this year and this was a picture soon afterward. Here is a picture before we changed the cloth.

Yeah isn't the truth - lol. So our guys that shoot on this table are 58-97 years old, so we are the Flintstones.
