Old Guard?

I got to ask one serious question, not a knock.

Do you really think pool action at the pro level is “all on the level” these days? And when did it all become that way?

I’m not saying all pool is biz, but let’s not drink the Kool-Aid, not all pool is what it appears to be…….

Keeping it real, like it or not,
Fatboy😀
I guess what I'm trying to say is it's less common for a pro to sneak around and bust unsuspecting locals. Sure it happens, but the internet put a pretty big damper on anyone who is at least informed about who they are playing. I'm sure there are still plenty of shenanigans, gotta make money somehow with the lack of money in pool.

I agree. It’s too bad but that’s the truth. It’s not all what it appears.

best regards,

Funny thing, we read all the time that you can't fly under the radar because of the internet but how many times have you seen somebody posting pictures and trying to ID someone? Been a few years now but not that many that a couple of strangers blew into town. One won a good sized tournament, the other placed about third. After hours action too, I think they took about ten grand out of town over the weekend. I am almost certain who they were but nobody questioned who they claimed to be, a couple of good ol' boys from Tennessee. Tennessee might have been their last stop but I would have made book that wasn't where they were from!

It wouldn't be easy making a living on the road today but then again it never was. One reason road players liked great big cars is that the seats slept better and there were damned few road players that didn't sleep in their cars sometimes. Danny Medina slept in his Chevy enough he had christened it the Malibu Hilton!

Not so many years ago Ruben Batista came though L.A. and beat up on every one who played him. No one knew who he was. It wasn't until the Filipinos arrived back in town and Dennis put a whup ass on him.

the newer players and most of the older ones never knew how to hustle when gambling. they won by out shooting their opponent. only so many people to play when you play lights out speed all the time.

learning how to handle people and make them like losing to you is long gone from the players that did succeed on the road. i can only think of a short handful that ever made serious money and kept it.

sleeping in your car. how is that a success. thats a homeless person.

You got that right. In my generation there was Toby Sweet, Gary Nolan, Bob Ogburn and a couple of others who were successful pool hustlers and hung onto their dough. And then there was the all time king of Hustlers, Jack Cooney, who was in a class by himself.

Ronnie Allen was the past master at getting people to bet it up, lose, and like it anyway. He did put some of his money to good use in raising his family and he donated the rest to the race track.
