Help With Vison

Maybe I am just getting old (75), but seems like my eyes get tired after several games and I start missing simple shots. I wear progressive lens and can obtain 20-15 on the eye charts. Have an 8 rating in ACS league play. Am wondering if there are some drops for my eyes or maybe some tinted lens that would help this problem. Would welcome suggestions.

Best to consult an Ophthalmologist.

That said, we become more dehydrated as we age (I’m 67). My perception is that I blink less while playing. So, my best guess would be to force more water consumption (even while playing) and use a good quality moisturizing eye drop with minimal additives (like Blink).

I sometimes simply keep my eyes closed when I am not at the table (and sometimes with my glasses off). This allows
my eyes to relax and rest between shots (and/or games) and it helps keep them moist too.

It is most probably not your eyes if you already know that they are corrected to 20-15. Have you been checked for cataracts at your age? It may be disturbing to hear, but much more likely that at age 75 your ability to stay focused mentally, not your eyesight ability, per se, is the true culprit here.

It is very common with age to begin to lose the ability to maintain high level focus for longer durations. Here are some tips to help alleviate the effects of this; regarding your pool game :

1. Stay as relaxed mentally as possible during your matches- find whatever works for you to do this.
2. Be sure to have a complete pre shot routine so that your actual final focus on the object ball is kept to the minimum time needed to complete the stroke correctly.
3. Use your time between matches and games to relax yourself, no hyper texting on the phone , stressful personal conversations, etc.
4. Eat lightly before and if you must, during the matches.
5. No alcohol on match day.
6. Get sufficient sleep and rest for a few days and nights prior to your match day.

All of these will help you maintain your maximum ability to focus on match day- being 75 requires much more diligence in these areas to maintain focus over a longer period than when you were 25 - just a fact of life, but you can help with these tips.

I doubt it would be cataracts, as I would think you would not be able to be corrected to 20-15 if you had.

I am not an optometrist and this is not to be taken as medical advice.

Here is my situation:

- 65 years old next month.
- Can still see quite well at a distance.
- For reading, I could get by with just reading glasses and did just that from about age 50 to age 59. I finally got tired of taking readers off to see at a distance ... that and losing them because I put them down.

I told my eye doctor that I was an avid player and that I could see fine without glasses at a distance ... and I could read fine up close ... it was that arm's length to maybe 7-8 feet that was a bit blurry and glaring.

They tweaked something in the middle range, moved the focus point a bit closer than it had been, and that little bit has made all the difference.

I am not trying to criticize you, but I've learned that there is play in the middle range of bi-focals. Talk to him/her on your next check and explain in detail what ... and how far away ... the diminished vision is.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Will start using some of them and see if it helps.

If eyes are chrronically dry, there is a surgery using Punctal plugs. It takes just a few seconds with local pain control and it plugs up a drain hole in your eye so more tears are there for lubricating the eye. It quick and painless mostly. Ask you Opth about it.

I am 69 and have tried contacts and settled on Decot glasses for pool and shooting. When it comes to dry eyes I drink plenty of water daily and use Refresh Plus single vial eye drops. I use non preservative solution as it seems to be more comfortable on my eyes. I tried many different brands and the Refresh brand has given me the most comfort...

I’m 74 and no lines are fine for everything I do except pool. I never thought that I would get contacts. But five years ago I gave them a try,I only use them for pool. When I got them I explained I’m only using them for pool and anything past 15 feet isn’t my concern. After the second attempt we hit the sweet spot and Pool is fun again.
