US OPEN coverage

So this is the us open and they are all about Judd Trump . He played twice today on the TV table instead of our USA #1 Player Shane ! I’m not understanding, things sure have changed !!!!!
It's on main stream TV in the U.K. and they need ratings. Good ratings = more and better TV paid advertisements and that is what keeps shows on TV. Pretty sure they feel the best way to achieve that is to have Trump who is a big star overseas on as much as they can before he gets knocked out.

We can keep having no tour and no fans or we can trust Matchroom to make the changes necessary to build a tour and fan base. They announced a UK open today that I'm sure will have many more snooker players jumping in - I'm sure they won't suck as bad as 90% of the Americans that entered this event.

Things need to change, but some people would rather keep our(pool) players broke with no tour 🤔
Yeah I’m starting to understand it now. Just never been much of a tournament player, I like the old school action with 150 strangers in 6 months ! My odds are better that way but to each his own !!!!! Enjoyed the matches yesterday and today looks awesome 👏…. cheers 🍻 mate lol 😂

TV is about ratings and revenue. I would be willing to bet that more Europeans are watching this then Americans. Therefore, Judd on the stream table makes more sense because a lot of people will tune in for that. Judd is more of a world wide name that Shane is. People need to stop thinking pro pool is just in the US. It is a global game. Kinda like soccer here. It isn't the biggest sport here in the states but it is a monster in Europe.

Totally agreed, but you know someone could run a free tournament with a $1 million first prize and huge payouts to like 50th place and someone here would find something wrong with it.

I’m learning to watch , these tournaments are not to bad . I’ll be in SC this week for the Chohan action match I’ll be looking for action all week and playing all strangers , come on out and play some …….You and I should have a One on one tournament bud ….. Not for free tho !!!!!!!!

All the dog and pony show elements aside, until Matchroom can partner with a proper broadcaster in the U.S. we will not see the growth that so many project to occur. If you are suffering through DAZN coverage, you'll note there are no commercial advertisers during the commercial breaks - that is not strong indicator of growth.

And damn, couldn't we get some better footage of Atlantic City. Close-ups of the old and unlit Harrah's sign aren't exactly captivating or compelling - especially when on a loop!

You are probably right, but if they are showing it on Sky Sports Arena, that would be equivalent to airing on ESPN 2 or Fox sports 1 here in the states. Makes sense that a lot more people would tune in vs. PPV.

I have read several interviews where industry inside type folks have said that the American PPV model is on life support and will likely not see 2025...cant come soon enough if you ask me....

In the action days, Gypsy, there were thousands players like you...I miss them all to hell. If I ever happen to see you in a pool hall, I’m gonna buy you a drink.

I don't know if it was just me but I got a sports alert on my phone from ESPN about the US Open this morning. First time a non ESPN televised pool tournament got any recognition in like forever. Either way, I thought it was cool.

I went broke to a good player at least 40 times when I was young.
He finally had to quit me...I won a big tournament ( for us’ns) he came out of the crowd and said “ I made you a player!”

Happened to me when I came back home to Dayton after three long years away. All of a sudden I was beating a few good players and everybody (including the guys who used to beat on me) wanted to be my friend. It was kind of cool to play in the Dayton tournaments and see some of my high school buddies in the stands sweating me. I finally got a little respect. :)

A couple observations from the tourney so far...

Matchroom's production is top notch. From the camera work to the commentators, to the player interviews, it just feels like a big, professional event. Tip of the hat to those folks.

Pro pool may have a 9 ball problem. From what I understand, 9 ball was chosen for the speed of play...more TV friendly. Now, I have loved every minute of this tourney. However, I made my daughter and her boyfriend (both high school seniors) sit down and watch 30 minutes or so of the svb-yapp match. Neither of them are pool players or fans, but Ibthought maybe it would be like how even non fans tune in to the super bowl because it is such a big event.

After about 4 racks, the boyfriend comments that it was pointless since it seemed that if you make a ball on the break, you win the rack. I tried to explain about some of the finer intricacies and skill, and his comment was that yapp was up 5 racks and hadn't had to shoot a shot over 3 feet long. My daughter then chimed in with nobody would want to watch football if only one team got to play offense...

It got me to thinking...here I am riveted to the TV, enjoying every shot, and here are 2 casuals, the type who pool needs to bring in, and they are bored to tears.

Maybe it's the game, maybe it's the winner breaks, maybe pool is destined to remain a niche sport that only we lucky few truly love. I don't know the answer, but it is worth a thought...

Well, what do kids know anyhow!?haaaa
I do think an alternate break would add a lot to the viewers side and overall competition but nobody seems to be asking my opinion.
