People bitching about 7’ tables

I have zero interest in watching a pro play on a bar table. When I try to watch it seems silly.
There are many matches on the USBTC that turn out to be pretty sporty. Would you play in the US bar table championship with top-ranked players?

Another question.... How many top ranked players refuse to play in it because it's 7 ft tables? On the contrary, I think they would tell you that a 7ft table has its own challenges.

Get over yourself. I play on both 9’ and 7’ why? because, both of them help you to be a better pool player. Whether it’s a shorter shot on a smaller table or a longer shot on a big table. Yes I agree it is a more satisfying game on the big table, but you can still learn to play well on a small table and you can you use that to learn how to play smaller/shorter shots or shape by playing on a small table. You can use that knowledge to play smaller/shorter shots or shape on a big table. Don’t get me wrong everyone knows they got to take the longer shot some time but you can learn to shorten that shot If you play on a smaller table. For Fuc$ sake some of you people seem to not like pool at all. Just play on whatever and have fun. Be happy to be able to play on both and put your ego aside. You can still learn and be happy on a smaller table if you don’t have a stick up your ass. Some of you die hards for the 9’ only, I want to play on the small table just to see what you can do on the kids table as some call it. Would you be able to compete with Shane or orcollo in a race to 100 on the little table? That’s what I thought…. then STFU and play some pool on whatever and get better at whatever. Love pool however it is and support it. Otherwise it will die with all the asshole rules here that you can’t play or pool is going to die if you play on a certain table GTFOH. Pool is going to die because of your piss poor attitudes.
I agree! I don’t think it matters what size table you play on, all sizes require great skill to reach its highest level. I will say I prefer 8 footers the most.

tone is a tad caustic, expecially for a message calling for "love" and "support".

imo, the only thing that has been worse for pool than 7' tables is crappy leagues.

I like ten foot tables best of all. I like snooker better than pool but I like snooker on the "short track" for snooker, a ten foot table. Guess that is sorta the equivalent of pool on a seven footer. When I was putting in ungodly hours hitting balls on snooker tables, ten foot pool tables, nine foot pool tables, and seven foot pool tables as well as some eight foot practice, I found that the snooker table and seven foot table played the closest to the same. I played most of a snooker game in a four feet by six feet area then running the numbered balls was a drill I had ran countless times.

There are crap nine foot tables and crap seven foot tables. Rebuild a seven footer into a decent table or get a Diamond to begin with and it is a fine table to play on, with quality balls. The same is true of a nine foot table except it is easier to find a quality table to begin with.

There are few world class seven foot specialists, most have aged out of the game or died. However, no nine foot specialist chased big action with a seven foot specialist on a seven foot table, not more than once or twice anyway!

The best in the world still miss on seven foot tables. Never seen any of them turn up their noses at a decent paying tournament on seven footers either. Perhaps we should all learn from them. With escalating prices for floor space the indications are that seven footers are the future of pool. A more and more common set up for new halls is all seven foot tables except for one "big" table, a nine footer. Not what I like to see but what is happening.

After owning an eight footer as a teenager I have come to really dislike them. They seem neither fish nor fowl. There is a chain of pool halls around here putting in all eight footers except one nine footer though. We are going to have to adapt to changes, like them or not. I think seven foot snooker or chinese pool tables may be the longer term future of pool in the US. Not what I look forward to but floor space pricing is going to demand smaller tables. Try finding a hall with all ten footers now!

I understand your frustration with some of the 9-foot snobs. I don't care if some people don't like 7-foot tables...just don't criticize the people who do.

One of the issues with home tables is we can get too used to them. I have ‘slightly’ smaller openings on my snooker table pockets than match tables to increase the level of difficulty. However, when I get on an unfamiliar match table I swear the pockets are smaller 🤨.

8 footers in a pool hall can be ok if a player doesn’t play on the same tables over and over. Good to mix it up and try out other locations. At home I even switch my ball sets every couple days so I don’t get too used to the way they play. It can be a rude awakening to play on an unfamiliar table with balls that don’t quite react as expected…lots of ‘I normally make that shot’.

This may not really have anything to do with table size but I had two coin tables in my pool room and they were never empty. What it was was the cost to play.

People often didn't like the clock ticking costing them money as they talked or went to the bathroom. It seemed hard to get the coin table players used to paying by the hour. In fact they hated it.

Nothing what so ever to do with the table size, just the cost to play. They would even say things like, "Why do we have to pay for four players when only one shoots at a time"? "Why do I pay to sit in a chair"?

Was a hard question to answer from their logical stand point. I later created a new pricing system getting rid of the per player pricing. I just went to a single player price and then two or more price. In other words, over two it was a flat rate.

After that guy's would let the girls play. Before, they sat them in the chair to watch not wanting to pay for them to play.

People liked it, I had full tables every night. They stayed longer, drank and spent more , my bottom line went up while actually lowering my price. Always had a waiting list, so very little down time in prime hours.

It's awful looking out at 7 or 8 empty tables waiting for another wave of business to arrive.

I know this was off subject but may mean something. I think the real goal, is to develope their interest with the hope they will become life long players.

Where they play or how they play may not be the most important thing. They will buy cues, spend money in the venue of their choice and a certain number will become serious players.

Or for that matter just serious rail birds and recreational players. But the important thing is, in their own way they continuing what has been a great sport a very, very long time.

Who on earth are you talking about? Who riled you? I have an 8.5’ but to be honest I enjoy 7’ better unless playing 1P or 14:1. I find the clusters and tighter routes more fun.

there needs to be a law, any establishment with 7' tables, only house cues are allowed. Let the jokers that need luggage to tote their cue collection get real for a bit.

I don’t play on 7’ tables…..period. Last time was in the summer of 2007 and I haven’t played on one since.
It’s what I refer to as beginners pool. People need to start somewhere to become interested in the pool game.

I concede it’s a version of pool where skill is still needed to be great but the game becomes too easy vs. 9 ft.
Personally, if the world only had 9’, 10’ & 12’ tables, players today would become much better or else just quit.

In my neck of the woods, it's the "jokers" who are keeping pool alive and ongoing. I don't understand table size elite-ism, unless you're a run-out player or a one or two innings per game average shooter. Ever hear of the SBE(Super Billiards Expo)? Are the people who attend "jokers", because 98% of the Expo is played on seven footers. Between TAP and numerous tournaments a couple thousand "jokers" play. Plus all the "luggage" and cues the "jokers" buy from the many vendors that sell at the Expo. It'd be interesting to see how they would supply house cues for this venue.

If 7-footers are so easy, I would like to see you sign up for the USBTC. I would like to follow you and just see how well you do. But I'm guessing you would probably think it would be too easy and wouldn't even be worth your time.

Better yet how about all of you nine-foot elitists sign up for the bar table championship. I mean after playing on nine foots the seven should be easy . I would be surprised if one of you cashed.

Are you up for the challenge? Even if you went two and out I would respect you for at least trying.

What is the purpose of playing pool is the question. Do you want to develop world champions or do you want to sell drinks. Is pool a sport or a pass time? The reason America sucks at pool as a sport is the 7ft table. Not a single American at the U. S. Open in the final eight. Can you fuck on a seven foot table? Yes, it's not comfortable but many have accomplished this task so 7ft tables clearly have a purpose. When I played pool I played it seriously so I played on a 9ft table. When I played golf I played on a par 72 Championship course. I broke par on the Executive course across the street from where I live. Did that make me a great golfer, I don't think so. 76 was my best score ever at the 500 Club. It's all in what playing pool means to you.
Great logic!!!!!! You think that the reason that the US is not faring well on the International level comes down to there being 7' tables out there and not about being able to make a decent living at pool??

I 2nd that!!!!!
I too would like to see all those who claim "7' tables are too easy" sign for the USBTC and clean house because it should be no problem for them playing on an "easy little table". I must be doing something wrong because I play on a 9' table all the time at home and I still don't win every tournament on a 7' table.
