Does it stop being fun?

I think, for me, pool stopped being fun last week. Playing on a 9' table meant a 90 miles round trip for me, most of it on a 2 lane jammed up freeway...just going to the hall puts me in a foul mood. Then (turned 78 today) the physical problems of old age limits me to only a couple of hours of table time before pain & tiredness stops me.
It saddens me...but yeah, I think I'm done...it's just not fun anymore.
Try and look for an alternate route. Make the trip a big part of the fun. I know you have the wheels to do it.

Happy Birthday, Bullitt.

I too am in my seventies. To overcome the problem of getting to a pool room I bought a table for my home. Not seeing the balls well led me to buy glasses from William Curran. Not having to drive to a pool room I can now play without the backache I usually get from driving. I now play whenever I want to and whenever my body allows me. Usually play an hour or so in the morning and an hour or so at night. Nice to get out of bed and shoot a few racks when I want.

i have a back injury that on bad days prevents me from playing. so i play 3c on the tablet, against koreans, vietnamese, turks. it's great fun. there a similar game but for pool and on PC. don't know what it's called but that's something worth checking out, i bet someone on here knows

I got back into pool a dozen years ago as a way to kill time when traveling for work. I was several states from home for weeks at a time and a coworker and I would play for hours and hours most nights. When we were back home we played weekly at local pool halls/bars but it was never much fun. I invested in a home table and now enjoy it much more. I control who is there, the music, the food, the drink and the equipment.

Is that an option for you?

That's a gorgeous table!

Like Logical above I got my own gold crown for home. I didn't have the space for a table so I enclosed a deck we had.

Invited locals to come and eat hardy (since I like to cook) and play for fun only. Now several of us have tables and we take turns hosting at our houses. Good food and fun.
This is what a few friends and I are also doing. One of my friend’s, Joe, has a table at his house. I’m in the process of overhauling my garage right now with a table and sitting room with a couch, tv, fridge, microwave, and washroom(I have an attached room on garage). No gambling at Joe’s. It’s nice. He likes to cook. My house I’ll let some just come over to play even if I’m not there after I know them better. play what you want. You get pissed take it out back. You eff my table up I’ll take you out back. If there are a lot of people. A few dollars max. You never want to ruin a nice evening with a bunch of people going broke. Lolol

So maybe you should go to the hall a week or 2 straight. If you don’t know anyone you might meet someone that has a table closer. Or a new crew that goes on certain days to the hall. Or go join a league or to play on league night. In a league you don’t have to show up every week. And you’ll always have someone to play when you go. If you didn’t join, there’s usually other people there on league night to play.

Pool itself stopped being “fun” for me a while back.

I still enjoy betting on pool, being around pool, AZB, rail bird stuff, Derby. So it’s not a total loss. I still enjoy cues.

Playing a game I can’t get better at, just ain’t my bag. I have to play something I can improve at. So I moved on from pool. I miss dabbing a ball perfectly, making the 9 on the snap from the hill in a expensive set. I miss the pre-internet adventure of the yellow pages in a new town. But that’s all done.

So move forward and make the best with what’s left.

I went down and hit about 10 shots last year in my basement , I had not played 3 racks in 2 years before that. This year I don't think I have hit a ball and every day it means less and less. It's no fun when it hurts .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
It's sad that you're having to slow down, (I won't say quit).
Hopefully other, and better, options will open up for you.

Your post saddens me. I hope you can find another solution. I definitely would not drive 90 miles on a regular basis, but I've gone to other (extreme) lengths to be able to play regularly. I'm 73 and not going to win any tournaments, but I still play every day and still enjoy it.
Good luck to you!

Happy Belated Birthday !
I feel your pain my one way drive to play on a 4 1/2 x 9 is closer to 270 miles round trip also on a 2 lane highway where I have to watch out for deer elk and a occasional black bear or antelope .

And I thought it was just cows…..j/k

It’s beautiful there, better than the traffic in the city that’s for sure.

Pool not being fun idd sad sometime based upon bad experience.

Like night a guy I will call LJ put on this major SHARKING ACTION at METRO Sports Bar IN PHX.

Walked over to State my complaint to TD, answer was LJ was friend of owner, big buyer of booze, nothing would be done.

I broke down, told LJ you win by forget, I am leaving for friendly places.

Next day on way home from VA, I stopped at Metro talked with manager about out of control LJ.

He was aware, but LJ was big drinker, bought rounds, and friend of owner.

Think that was last time I went to play Tournment there. Place actually got shut down for while after incident were under age kid got served, got drunk, and died in street on sport bike in front of Metro.

I can relate to your plight. Have you any kind of Sr. or Community Center where they might have a table?
Even in T or C, NM they have 1. But only open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. So the next 9 footers are in Las Cruces
at the Olhausen store/ pool room (Jerry's Place), which is a 120 mile round trip or I can run out past White Sands
to Alamogordo, NM 250 mile round trip to play at Mission Billiards. So I play mostly at my local VFW on a pair
of 7 foot Valleys. Better then nothin'. Oh yea, I've made 72 orbit around the Sun and will complete another the
end of April.
I have a friend in Holland, he always says "There is always a solution." Hope you find one that works for you.

What a lovely setup! Alas..house is much too small...:(
I'm going to try to interject some semi-logical reasoning here:

1.) Get over this obsession of only having to play on 9' tables.

2.) Clear out the largest room in your house and put in the biggest table you can comfortably get in it.

3.) Learn how to adapt, accept change, and set forth with a new mission.

4.) Have fun playing pool again!

My wife allowed me to turn our living room into a pool room. I only had room for a standard 8' table in it (Brunswick Bradford). It has been the second best investment I have ever made in life (right behind the house itself). When I am at home, there is not a single day that goes by that I don't shoot at least a few racks on it.....often for an hour or more.

We turned one of our spare bedrooms into a media (TV-watching) room, where I also have a small desk for my laptop. When people come over to visit we usually congregate in the pool room and converse while we get in a few racks of pool.

Cannot you see the value of scaling down, sacrificing home space, and continuing with a game that has given you much joy in life, even at the expense of a smaller table (even a barbox if neccessary)?

I wish you much happiness and hope you can find a way out of your doldrums. Stay well, my friend!

Well you have nothing to add but picking on English & Grammer.

When I said people suck, you can add yourself to my list that sucks.

Wonder if you trash person has great English & Spelling skills.

All I care about is trash man come, and pickup my trash.
Lighten up maybe.

What you wrote was "Think the total is 27 or 29, problem I’d people who do not understand they are luck to have to use for low cost.🤪. People suck.😭😭😭😭"

This is pretty garbled wordage, and I hadn't actually noticed your post until PJ made his comment. Then i went back and read what you wrote and i've been laughing for about 10 minutes at the mangled sentences you come out with.

Very entertaining!

Very similar to my home setup. I have forgone the "home" decor route and have my walls covered in things that you may find on a bar/pool room wall. Concert posters, record albums, motorcycle paraphenalia, jerseys I have worn in past sports endeavors and things like that. Plus I have a lot of things on my pool room's walls and tables that are a reflection of things I have done in my past years (work, sports, hobbies, etc.). All with my wife's blessings!

I bet you are enjoying your pool room as much as we enjoy ours!
