Hello to all, hope all is well. Recently, I had the opportunity to own a Mcdermott Defy Shaft, tried it out and paid for it right after. It's 31" .843 at the joint and 12.5 mm. Having shot with several carbon fiber shafts(Revo, Go, Becue, Jacoby, Cuetec..), the Mcdermott Defy plays the best out of the ones I tried. It is quiet, not soft like some say. The response I get from the cue ball is unbelievable. Before you say it's all in your head, I was a wooden shaft purist and The Defy really changed my outlook on carbon fiber shafts. It does get a little tacky but that happens with all shafts. A quick wipe with a damp cloth or paper towel and you're good to go. Just wanted to share my experience with the AZB community. Give this shaft a try!!

Personally I wouldn't use a paper towel because you run the risk of small scratches but a soft cloth or micro fiber towel will work great.

I play with maple shafts and hate wearing a glove.
I like to feel the shaft and table directly.
I tried a few hits with the Defy shaft the other day.
Tacky is not the word for it.
It was downright sticky.
Three hits and handed it back.
Big nope for me.

I have had a Defy shaft for about 6 months now. And I really do not have any issues with it being sticky. It will pick up dirt quicker than other CF shafts but I keep a microfiber cloth and some ultra glide that came with my shaft. I use it once a week or so to keep it slick as Owl Shit as my father used to say. My hands stay very dry, I know some players have sweaty hands and I can see where that would be a problem with the finish McDermott chose to use. Just my 2 cents worth.

I just tried a 12.5 Defy and am very impressed!
Very slick and has stayed slick.
Tip is waaay softer then anything I have played with. Not sure if it is the tip or shaft but I get more English with less effort. That isn't always a good thing starting out!
Friends play with Revo and they like the softer hit of the defy.

Do you have any idea what the tip was? Stock or did the owner have a new tip installed?

Sure you're talking about the Defy? The one i tried almost felt like it had a painted-on finish. Nothing like other cf shafts i've tried. Reminded me of the early BeCue shafts. I don't see how you could use one without a glove.

Brand new right out of the bag.

Wow. I found it to be kinda sticky/tacky. The guy that had it wears a glove and four of us 'non-glovers' that tried it all thought it was sticky. Guess it depends on how damp/dry one's hands are. It shot ok if you like a really soft hit.

Perhaps the finish has improved?

Yes, it's all in your head.

Well , I set up a 1 rail kick that I often try with any new cue . It is a shot which uses close to maximum english. The first 4 tries I got more English then I ever have in 20 years of trying , so no it isn't in my head.

Thank you for taking the time to voice your opinion😉

You hit slightly below center and added masse to the shot, that cause it to assist to spin farther than normal.

The only thing that effects spin is tip contact distance from center cue and acceleration through the cue ball.

That is it. Not shaft type, tip type, not carbon vs wood, none of that matters.

Spend 5 minutes on Dr. Dave's website to learn the physics of billiards and you will see it is so in your head.

So if I give you a house cue with an Elk Master tip on it, and my Exceed with an Ignite shaft and a Zan Hybrid Max tip, you’ll be able draw the cueball the same distance with both cues?

Yes. Which ever cue is lighter will actually be able to create more draw because you can achieve higher acceleration with a lighter cue.

So you’ve immediately contradicted yourself before we even get to tip and shaft material?

I have not contradicted myself. Please show where I did this.

Cue contact offset from center and acceleration are the only two things that matter. I haven't stated otherwise.
